With Dirty Dog Reverb, Safari Audio delivers an effects tool that deliberately avoids a polished, clean sound. This reverb plug-in was developed in collaboration with the eleven-time Grammy-winning producer and engineer Joe Chiccarelli and is aimed at anyone who wants to use reverb not just as a sense of space, but as a genuine part of the sound. Instead of smooth ambient pads, you get grit, energy, movement and character – ranging from a slight grain to completely torn-open effect textures.
Dirty Dog Reverb combines reverb, overdrive, filter and gate into a single effect that’s ideal for drums, guitars, vocals and creative effects buses. The sound can be subtly subtle, but just as quickly veer into much wilder territory. That’s exactly what makes the plugin so exciting for productions that shouldn’t sound standard, but should instead have personality, edge and a touch of controlled chaos.
One of the most powerful features of the Dirty Dog Reverb is its two separate overdrive stages. The first drive stage is positioned before the reverb and already influences the signal sent into the reverb chamber. The second drive stage comes into play after the reverb and colours the reverb tail itself. This allows you to determine very precisely whether the effect boosts the signal at the input, distorts the reverb tail itself, or does both simultaneously.
This is a real highlight, particularly for snare drum reverb, distorted vocal effects, gritty guitar ambiences or experimental sound design tracks.
Dirty Dog Reverb features a dual gate system that can operate either before the reverb, after the reverb, or in both positions simultaneously. This opens up significantly more possibilities than a classic reverb with simple decay behaviour. It allows you to shape the input signal more aggressively, rhythmically trim reverb tails or create highly controlled, pumping spatial textures.
This is particularly useful in modern mixes with plenty of movement and clear accents.
With a pre-delay ranging from 1 ms to 130 ms and a reverb time from 140 ms to 4000 ms, the effect can be finely tuned between direct spatiality and a vast, sprawling reverb. This means Dirty Dog Reverb works equally well on compact drum kits as well as on large vocal or FX pads. Its strength always lies in its interaction with Drive and Gate, as this is precisely what creates this characterful, wild sound.
The Blend control makes it easy to find the right balance between the dry and processed signals. This is particularly important because Dirty Dog can quickly become very prominent. Added to this are selectable oversampling for a cleaner sound when using high Drive settings, and Auto Gain within the overdrive section, so that changes in sound can be assessed more accurately without the volume distorting the impression.
Dirty Dog Reverb also includes Artist Presets, selected by Carlos de la Garza and Ken Sluiter. This is particularly handy if you want to get started quickly and are looking for musical starting points that sound like real-world applications rather than empty marketing claims.
This plug-in is ideal for producers, mix engineers and sound designers who work with drums, vocals, guitars, effects tracks and creative buses, and who deliberately prioritise character. When a reverb is needed not just to create space, but to actively shape the soundscape, Dirty Dog is right in its element.
