The Safari Audio Dragon EQ is a 3-band EQ for anyone who wants to shape sounds in a hands-on, musical and quick way, rather than dissecting them surgically. Instead of endless minute adjustments, the Dragon EQ takes a direct approach with low, mid and high bands, additional drive per band and a clever mid/side matrix. This allows you to boost the lows, shape the mids and lift the highs, whilst simultaneously creating harmonic clarity and density exactly where they really benefit the signal.
Dragon EQ is designed for producers, engineers and musicians who, when equalising, think not only of frequencies but also of tone, energy and movement in the mix. The plug-in covers the range from 18 Hz to 22 kHz, making it suitable for everything from a rich foundation to airy highs. The focus is clearly on broad, musical adjustments that quickly lead to a polished, exciting soundscape.
Dragon EQ really comes into its own on vocals, drums, guitars, synths, keyboards, acoustic signals and the stereo bus. It is not a dry, analytical EQ, but a tool for sounds with character.
One of Dragon EQ’s most exciting features is its dedicated Drive slider for each band. This allows you not only to boost or cut frequencies, but also to add extra harmonic density, warmth or edge to each range in a highly targeted manner. This is particularly powerful because it allows the lows, mids and highs to each develop their own distinct character.
More punch in the low end, more presence in the mids, or more sparkle with a touch of aggression in the highs: it’s precisely this kind of sound-shaping that makes Dragon EQ so musical and lively.
With the integrated Mid/Side matrix, you can apply EQ not only to the overall signal in the traditional way, but also specifically to the mid or sides. This gives you significantly more control over the stereo image. For example, you can make the sides airier, keep the mid tighter, or specifically emphasise certain frequency ranges within the panorama.
This is an incredibly useful tool, particularly for mix buses, instrument groups or wide synth pads, as it allows you to control depth and width in a very musical way.
As Dragon EQ works with additional saturation, oversampling is a key consideration. It ensures greater clarity and a cleaner sound, particularly when the drive levels are set higher. This means the sound remains defined and pleasant even with characterful processing.
Dragon EQ is deliberately designed to feel straightforward. Instead of holding you up with countless modes and sub-menus, it gets straight to the point.
