The Telefunken CU-29 Copperhead is a versatile valve condenser microphone suitable for studio and home recording. Possibly the most stunning looking microphone we’ve ever set our eyes on, the sound and clarity is also something pretty special and usually only heard in microphones twice the price.
The copperhead proprietary circuit features a NOS Telefunken tube and a custom output transformer and uses the single membrane version of the capsule used in the AR-51 and AK-47 microphones. Valve microphones lend a very pleasing colour to the source material without ever robbing it of its true character.
Its cardioid pickup pattern helps to focus the sound for instruments you want to bring out in a mix, and it also exhibits a bright top end without ever sounding harsh; perfect for mellow acoustic guitars, as demonstrated in the video below.
The extended bottom end will also make this a great choice for baritone/bass voices and outside kick drum to get a great low end thump while bringing out the detail of the drum sound. The overall sound of the CU-29 can be described as ‘hi-fi’ with a fantastic presence, with a wonderful clarity that can help lead vocals cut through a mix.
