The responsive PHA-4 keyboard

The 88-key hammer-action keyboard fitted in the FP-40 is the same as that in the FP-30X. It is a PHA-4 keyboard with optimised velocity response curves. The triple sensor enables exceptionally dynamic and fast playing, as there is no need to wait for the struck key to return to its upper position. Combined with the updated sound generation, this results in a richly nuanced sound. The surface of the keys is slightly textured, which significantly reduces the likelihood of fingers slipping.

Optimised sound

The newly developed speaker system delivers a clear and spatial sound that also benefits the lower registers. Thanks to the upward-facing speaker arrangement and an output power of 2 x 12 watts, the FP-40 impresses with its presence and richness of sound.

The updated Soundengine

The FP-40 utilises Roland’s latest Piano Reality Sampling technology. By incorporating modelling elements from Roland’s premium models, this technology enables seamless touch sensitivity and tonal transitions, as well as realistic resonance behaviour with natural note decay. This primarily benefits the outstanding piano sounds, which form part of the total of 305 sounds.

Flexible connections

When it comes to connectivity, the FP-40 is very flexible. On the front left, there is a TRRS socket for headsets, though standard headphones can also be connected to it. USB-C serves as an alternative power supply and provides wired MIDI and audio. The USB-A port is designed for USB sticks to provide additional storage for audio recordings. Via Bluetooth, the FP-40 enables MIDI and audio transmission over a wireless connection. The stereo audio output allows you to connect the instrument to a mixing desk or amplifier in the usual way. Two pedal inputs – one for a sustain pedal and the other for the KPD-70 pedal unit (available separately in combination with the KSF-40 piano stand) – expand the range of expressive possibilities when playing.

The handy Piano Sphere app offers an even wider range of features to all smartphone and tablet owners using the iOS or Android operating systems. The app provides free access to a wide selection of high-quality, licensed and royalty-free content that motivates and inspires users to play and practise regularly. For a small upgrade fee, users can also unlock even more songs, bringing the total to over 1,000 tracks.

The highlight of this app is the step-by-step piano lessons, which have been developed in collaboration with learning experts. These digital lessons are tailored to the user’s skills and musical interests and adapt to the time available. Thanks to the unique combination of hardware and software, users receive personalised learning feedback directly via the Piano Sphere button! In addition, the ‘Streak’ feature offers motivational tools that encourage daily practice and thus help users to play the piano regularly.
