The Sony PCM-D100 is a high quality audio recorder capable of recording up to 192 kHz/24bit PCM and DSD. It is designed to perform at the highest possible sound quality for demanding recordings of live music, theatrical performances, or electronic reporting. The PCM-D100 supports the latest high-resolution codecs and formats such as LPCM with up to 192kHz/24bit and DSD (Direct Stream Digital) with 2.8MHz resolution. As such, the PCM-D100 is part of Sony's recently launched "High-Res Audio" initiative and is the unification of all the successful attributes of its two predecessors, the Sony PCM-D1 and Sony PCM-D50, into one product. Rounding out this new development are many other innovative features. Two high-quality swiveling condenser microphones can be aligned optionally at 0°/90°/120° angles, allowing optimal adaptation to different recording situations. With a linear frequency response from 20Hz to well over 30kHz and a high sensitivity of -31dB/Pa, the internal microphones capture every sound detail, no matter how fine, making the use of additional external microphones largely unnecessary. A specially developed noise limiter and 100dB signal/noise ratio make noise-free recordings possible even of extremely quiet sounds.

Much better than any Zoom or Tascam unit. Downsides: No XLR inputs and built-in microphones are very sensitive to wind noise (also with furry protection cover). Overall, a great recorder and a step up in sound quality.
I've got a D50, the model that preceded this one, and it's an excellent recorder: the specs of this one are even better, and I hope this one will still be on the market when I next need to buy. As long as you learn to use it without handling noise (the mics are sensitive, so you MUST buy a Rycote too) it's just brilliant - you can set them to crossed pair or wide depending on what type of stereo you need, or set the mics to straight ahead if you need two track mono (ideal for presenter links / voice-overs etc). The batteries last an eternity, and with the additional Sony memory stick you can record masses of material if needs be. It's really solidly built too - I've dropped mine more than once but it just keeps chugging. The file structure is a bit convoluted, but apart from that I recommend this machine 100%. There are cheaper recorders out there, but I tend to remember my Gran's advice 'buy cheap, buy twice' - this recorder should give years of excellent service.
I bought this after reading good reviews online and being dissatisfied with the noise of my previous recorder. The difference in quality was even bigger than I hoped for. The only thing that I feel could be improved is the usability in totally dark conditions but you get familiar with the controls so fast that it doesn't really matter. I'll be using this to record owls and other birds as well as relaxing nature soundscapes.
