The Hammond XK-7D is a modern, digital organ that is consistently modelled on the characteristics of classic Hammond tonewheel organs. Hammond places particular emphasis on the authentic reproduction of the electromechanical sound generation, the playing feel and the characteristic side effects of historical instruments. At its heart is the new VEM (Virtual Electro Mechanical) sound engine, which models both the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the originals.
A key feature of the XK-7D is the newly developed, dual-manual 6L Waterfall keyboard. Each key has six contact points, which very precisely reproduces the playing characteristics of classic Hammond organs. Hammond refers to this as the Multi-Contact System. As a result, notes respond differently to light or fast keystrokes, similar to the original electromechanical contact systems.
Organists who play techniques such as fast glissandos, ghost notes or typical ‘Hammond slides’ will particularly benefit from this sophisticated contact architecture. The keyboard features two manuals, each with 73 keys, 61 of which are playable. The first twelve colour-inverted keys are intended for quick access to presets.
The XK-7D utilises the new Virtual Electro-Mechanical Engine (VEM). It simulates the physical and electrical processes of a genuine tonewheel organ. The modelled components include tonewheels and their mechanical behaviour, voltage fluctuations within the circuitry during polyphonic playing, leakage (crosstalk between adjacent tonewheels), tonewheel eccentricities with volume fluctuations, wow and flutter caused by the mechanical operation of the tonewheel drives, and impedance changes and interactions between drawbars and amplifier stages.
Particularly noteworthy is the highly detailed modelling of the legendary AO-28 valve preamp and its associated matching transformer. This produces the typical saturation, compression and warmth of vintage Hammond organs. In addition to the classic Hammond sounds, the XK-7D also offers transistor combo organs from Italy, the UK and Japan, as well as pipe organ sounds with 40 freely combinable stop voices.
Percussion is regarded as one of the most important sonic characteristics of classic Hammond organs and has been specifically reworked in the XK-7D. Hammond has redesigned both the envelopes and the trigger points to replicate the behaviour of historical instruments as accurately as possible. The four switches – Percussion On/Off, Third Harmonic, Fast Decay and Volume Soft – provide direct access to the sound-shaping parameters that are particularly noticeable in jazz, rock and gospel Hammond sounds, thanks to their distinctive attack.
The XK-7D stands out with its comprehensive and flexible effects section. The Leslie simulator is a digital evolution of the well-known Leslie effect. In this version, the effect also models sound reflections within the Leslie cabinet, air flow and rotational behaviour, different microphone types and adjustable virtual microphone positions. This allows the sound character to be adjusted from subtle jazz tones right through to aggressive rock sounds. In addition, a genuine 11-pin Leslie connection is available for original Leslie cabinets.
The two classic Hammond effects, vibrato and chorus, are available in the usual outstanding quality. Under EFFECT 1, you’ll find the tremolo, wah-wah, ring modulator and compressor algorithms. These can be applied to the upper manual, the lower manual or both, as desired. EFFECT 2 can be applied to the sum signal and offers the effects Auto-Pan, Phaser, Flanger and Chorus. Spatial effects are also included in the form of Delay and Reverb, which are implemented as standalone effect processors. Reverb can be placed either before or after the Leslie effect, which has a significant impact on the spatial effect.
The rear connections underline the XK-7D’s professional credentials. An 11-pin circular connector allows connection to a Leslie rotary speaker. The audio outputs comprise a pair of stereo outputs, a headphone output and additional bass and rotary outputs. To control the instrument, there are sockets on the underside for the XPK-250W Mk3 pedalboard and the CU-1 Halfmoon Switch. On the rear panel, there are four inputs for foot pedals (EXP-100, Expression and 2x Switch). With MIDI In, Out and Pedal, as well as USB MIDI, communication with other MIDI equipment and to and from a DAW is also covered.
