The Fame Audio Orbital 208S is a near-field monitor designed for use in all stages of production in a modern recording studio. As a model featuring an 8" woofer, it is suitable for recording, editing and mixing, as well as audio production in all monitoring environments, with a particular focus on a powerful bass response. As a studio loudspeaker, it is specifically designed to reproduce the entire frequency spectrum faithfully.
As a full-range loudspeaker, the Orbital 207S delivers deep bass response and sufficient sound levels for relaxed working and music listening, whilst always guaranteeing a pleasant, effortless listening experience.
Thanks to its extremely tight manufacturing tolerances and high signal fidelity, it is fully qualified for professional use and is also ideally suited to multi-channel setups in Dolby Surround and Atmos formats.
As with all models in the Orbital series, great importance has been placed on high-quality components: the polypropylene woofers ensure a fast, crisp response in the bass and fundamental frequency ranges. Careful selection of the driver has resulted in a distinctive mid-range reproduction, ensuring that the critical range between 200 and 400 Hz in particular is rendered cleanly and with great detail.
A distortion-free, transparent and clear reproduction of the presence and high-frequency ranges was ensured from the outset by the selection of a high-quality dome tweeter. This makes the speakers in the Fame Orbital series ideal as the foundation for a stereo or surround sound setup calibrated using room correction software from Sonarworks or Dirac.
These modern, high-efficiency drivers do not require a high-power amplifier: even a single Orbital 205S loudspeaker achieves a peak of 102 dB SPL in the near field at 1 m – more than enough headroom for any workspace.
The active crossover and the bi-amping power amplifier have also been developed with particular care, ensuring that the range around the crossover frequency at 2.7 kHz remains completely transparent and high-resolution. This ensures that the overtone spectrum – for example, of electric guitars or woodwind instruments – is reproduced naturally and faithfully.
For a focus on the bass range and higher monitoring levels or larger listening spaces, the larger models in the Orbital series – the 207S and 208S – are available, featuring 6.5-inch and 8-inch woofers respectively.
The Fame Audio Orbital studio monitors are equipped with effective tools for adapting to common application scenarios.
The Acoustic Space filter helps to eliminate masking effects in the midrange, such as those caused by, for example, table reflections. This keeps your midrange clear so you can hear exactly what’s happening, helping to prevent fatigue and mixing errors.
The Treble EQ allows you to boost or cut the high-frequency band from 10kHz. Adjust the treble response of your monitors to suit your personal taste or your room acoustics, depending on how much acoustic damping you have applied.
The Fame Audio Orbital presents itself as understated, timelessly stylish, yet unique – and there’s a reason for that: The speaker’s front panel is designed for optimal sound wave guidance; the waveguides surrounding the tweeter and woofer ensure the most point-like dispersion possible and minimise the vibration of the surrounding space. Choose your listening position at your leisure within the stereo triangle and benefit from a high degree of freedom of movement whilst experiencing only minimal interference from reflections off ceilings and walls.
The Orbital speakers’ connections are available in balanced jack, XLR and unbalanced RCA formats. Connect the speakers to any audio source; for example, connect your audio interface via the TRS jack sockets, your DJ controller or any line-level signal via the RCA sockets, or the DI output of your digital multi-effects unit or workstation via the XLR sockets.
My overall conclusion regarding this review of the Fame Orbital series is very positive. I do not see this as an overloaded monitor series full of marketing gimmicks, but rather three clearly differentiated studio tools that share the same fundamental character and are neatly categorised according to room size and application. All three models feature a 2-way design, room adaptation, treble EQ, multiple analogue inputs and a clear focus on recording, mixing and everyday studio use. This is particularly exciting for budget-conscious musicians, producers and content creators. (Read the full review on Sound&Recording)
