PA Systems for Musicians

The term PA stands for Public Address. A public address system is another term for a music or sound system. This refers to electrical systems that amplify audio signals and make them accessible to human perception by means of loudspeakers.

In recent years, public address systems have evolved considerably. This development is due to the increased use of digital technology and new materials.

Among musicians, the term PA system or PA installation has established itself. However, there is a very wide range of PA systems and a lot of competition among manufacturers. The market has become almost unmanageable. High performance is not necessarily synonymous Buying a band's own PA needs to be considered carefully. How do you define the requirements for transport, assembly and dismantling as well as for personnel? Do you need your own technician to operate the system during the performance? If you are looking for a rental company, you are often better advised to look for a permanent PA lender with whom you can conclude a framework agreement and thus get better conditions.

What is important when choosing the right PA system?

Musicians of a live band prefer a good PA system that is as practical as possible, easy to transport and easy to set up and dismantle. Professional sound companies, on the other hand, operate on a completely different scale. They plan PA systems for live stages, city festivals and stadium concerts.

Accordingly, PA systems are available in all sizes and capacities, from the space-saving compact PA units to processor-controlled multi-array systems. Which model is best for you depends on your music style and the size of your band.

Equally important are the venues where you play most frequently: Do you play exclusively with acoustic instruments? Or do you DJ? If you also provide background sound in street cafés, hotel lobbies or party rooms, a compact PA system is perfectly adequate. Modern compact systems usually have all the individual components arranged in one enclosure. Due to their low weight, they are easy to transport. If you ever need more, these PA systems can easily be expanded by purchasing a second identical system or an active subwoofer. Especially in this class we find a lot of new developments. The Anti Resonance Bracing (ARB) and the Multicell Transformer (MCT) technology from HK Audio significantly improve the efficiency of the loudspeakers and make the small dimensions of the PA system possible.

Rock or metal bands should not rely on these compact PA systems. The higher demands on range and volume require a mid-range PA system.

In systems that usually consist of two-way or three-way systems, each path has its own amplifiers and loudspeakers. Basically, these mid-range systems are divided into "active" and "passive".

Irrespective of the dimension of a PA system, they consist of fairly similar basic components:

  • a PA Mixer
  • a transmission system consisting of PA amplifiers, PA loudspeakers and bass subwoofers

If an active PA or - even smaller - an active monitor is more suitable for musicians and small live bands, the PA technology of large PA systems consists of a large number of components, such as

  • Line-Arrays
  • Full-range Speakers
  • Monitor Speakers
  • FOH Mixer
  • Monitor-Mix
  • Transmission systems for wireless microphones

The fact that you need a PA system even for smaller sound systems is obvious to anyone who has ever tried to use a hi-fi system to sound a larger party. Hifi speakers sound good in the living room, but can't provide the necessary sound pressure for party sound in larger rooms or even outdoors. Such PA systems might even be harmed if they were to be used to deliver sound to a larger audience. One immediately notices from the performance of the bass section that a suitable PA system is in order here.

A PA system requires high-performance power amplifiers and appropriately dimensioned bass speakers or subwoofers. Good studio monitors can't keep up. A hi-fi system or studio monitors (e.g. nearfield or midfield) are designed for much more filigree playback characteristics. For a live gig, you've got to bring in the big guns. Modern personal PA systems are small and handy and can hardly be distinguished optically from studio monitors or a 2.1 studio PA.

How is a PA system operated?

When distributing the power, the light and sound circuits should be strictly separated in order to avoid unwanted background noise caused by interference. The best thing would be to have your own fused circuit. Additionally, for the power supply of 19" racks there are intelligent multiple connectors, so-called power conditioners, which filter out overvoltages and other interference.

With the cables, the power supply should be as far away as possible from the signal-carrying audio cables. Should a mains hum of 50/60 Hz nevertheless occur on the system: NEVER tape off the grounding/protective conductors of the mains cables! This is life-threatening!

Use so-called isolating transmitters or DI boxes (e.g. Palmer PLI-01 or Fame Audio DI-1). This is looped into the signal path causing the hum, it is thus physically interrupted and the signal is transmitted by an isolating transformer.
