The Cobalt5S from Modal Electronics is a five-voice virtual analog synthesizer with a 37-key keyboard. The synthesis is based on 40 different algorithms, which can generate more complex waveforms in addition to classic waveforms such as sine, pulse, triangle and sawtooth. The resonant, four-pole ladder filter can be freely morphed using four different filter types. The built-in polyphonic sequencer and arpeggiator, as well as the two parallel DSP effects give the Cobalt5S a lively character ad hoc.

The slimmed down version of the Cobalt series is ideal for all those for whom space is an argument and yet you can't or don't want to do without a keyboard. You have to do without the joystick on the Cobalt5S, but there is an at least as cool X/Y/Z touchpad, which can modulate any parameter three-dimensionally (due to the pressure point of the Z-axis). Regarding all parameters, the 5S is fully compatible with all other versions, so that patches are interchangeable. Only the number of voices is reduced compared to the other models. Power can be supplied via a separately available power supply or USB.

Filter

Four-pole, morphable ladder filter with resonance and four switchable configurations. The Cutoff frequency is controlled by the large endless potentiometer, allowing precise and sensitive adjustment of the filter. Below this are the controls for resonance and for morphing, which allows stepless crossfading between four different filter characteristics (morphing). This function, in conjunction with the complex oscillators, allows you to create remarkably abstract sounds, which makes Modal Electronics Cobalt5S ideal for sound design.

Modulation

Three dedicated envelope generators for AMP, MOD and FILTER that can be accessed independently or simultaneously, including negative (inverted) versions for MOD and FILTER ENVs. Three audio LFOs with tempo sync (two poly, one global) with seven different waveforms. Eight assignable modulation slots plus four fixed modulation routings for a total of 12 modulation sources and 55 modulation destinations.

Sequencer and arpeggiator

Polyphonic realtime sequencer with 512 notes with four additional tracks for parameter animations.
Flexible and programmable Arpeggiator with 32 steps and pause function. Complex progressions with up to 2048 steps possible before repeating.

FX

Two independent, powerful and user-configurable Stereo-FX-Engines for Chorus, Phaser, Flanger (Pos), Flanger (Neg), Tremolo, LoFi, Rotary, Stereo Delay, Ping-Pong Delay, X-Over Delay and Reverb, which can be arranged in any order.
