With the OB-4, Teenage Engineering has reinvented the portable radio and enhanced it with a number of sophisticated features such as a sample function and Bluetooth. A high-fidelity speaker system featuring two 4-inch woofers and a pair of neodymiumtweeters, which deliver a clean and natural sound with 38 watts per channel and a sound pressure level of up to 100dB. The aerodynamically optimised bass reflex port ensures deep and rich bass. The built-in rechargeable battery also contributes to the OB-4’s portability. Once fully charged, it offers up to 72 hours of music enjoyment; at maximum volume, the battery life is reduced to around 8 hours. On average, however, around 40 hours of operation can be achieved. The coil antenna can be neatly tucked away in the handle when required, so it doesn’t get in the way when reception is good whilst still serving its purpose. The handle is also useful for adjusting the OB-4’s positioning. The Teenage Engineering OB-4 Matte Black speaker is ideal for any setting where it doesn’t need to be constantly quiet but where good sound quality is desired. Whether as a radio at work, a Bluetooth speaker for your smartphone playlist, a portable speaker for a similarly portable synth setup, or even for installations in shops and restaurants.
Sampling: During operation, the OB-4 continuously records for two hours at a time. So if you miss your favourite song or the news on the radio, you can manually turn back the dynamically responsive tape wheel – which is always running – until you reach the desired point. You can also fast-forward within these two hours and adjust the playback speed.
Alternatively, any signal (e.g. an MP3 player or OP-Z synthesiser) can be fed in via the audio input (3.5 mm stereo jack); in Bluetooth mode (A2DP / Stereo AAC, BT 5 LE), you can connect your smartphone to the OB-4, for example. A fourth option is Disk Mode, which currently offers three alternative modes that, apart from the metronome, are well suited to providing constant background ambient sound:
