Product information - SPL Electronics TwinTube Processor AES AD

Tube Saturation & Tube Harmonics Processo incl. AD converter

For the first time, TwinTube combines the two main tube sound effects in one processor: saturation effects by saturation control and overtone processing by harmoncs control. Both stages operate separately from each other and are each based on their own tube circuit - two tubes work in one module. The effects can therefore be applied as desired: individually and thus separately, but also together. The saturation effects are caused by bringing the tube to the limit of its operating voltage and beyond with increasing intensity. In contrast to semiconductors, the tube does not"tilt" into the range of distortion at a certain level, but rather gradually approaches its load limit with constantly increasing distortions. It produces the typical sound effects that can often have an advantageous effect in audio signal processing: on the one hand, depending on the dosage, subtle to violent harmonic distortions, on the other hand, however, it also produces a compression of the sound, i.e. limiting effects with a pleasantly round or soft sound. Acoustically and also in its applicability this can be compared very well with tape saturation effects. Harmonic distortion and limiting are the classic, well-known tube effects that are still indispensable components of sound design today. Less known are the effects that tube circuits can have for improving presence and spatial impressions by processing overtone structures. For overtone processing by the harmonics stage, a special circuit is used that combines a coil-capacitor composite with the tube. The circuit reacts dynamically to the audio signal and changes both overtone and phase structures. The processing of the phase structures (moments of sensation) moves in the microsecond range and has nothing to do with cancellations, as they occur with displacements by 180 degrees. Decisive for the sound quality is the adjustment of the volume ratios of the overtone spectra. Overtone enrichment is not based on the generator principle of exciters, in which overload products are added to the original signal. The HARMONICS control of the TwinTube results in a more balanced overtone structure that effectively brings sounds to the fore without causing extreme level changes. A voice, for example, immediately separates itself from a mixture and prevails in a clearly defined forward direction.

canto

Optimizing vocal tracks is a flagship discipline of TwinTube. EQ processing can often be dispensed with completely in order to remove a voice from a mix and bring it forward with clearly defined assertiveness.

Acoustic Guitars

While the processing success of electric guitars clearly depends on the extent to which they have already been processed by tube amplifiers and other effects, there is often a great potential for optimization and design in the processing of acoustic guitars. This way you can intensify the touch sounds of plucked guitars considerably. The assertiveness in the mixture by improving the presence can increase considerably without significant level increases. Dosed harmonic distortion gives the sound somewhat more roughness or earthiness and compresses through the elegant compression effects, so that the signal can clearly gain loudness.
