With Hippie Elephant, Safari Audio presents a reverb plug-in that deliberately moves away from classic reverberation spaces, instead embracing granular textures, freeze sound design and dreamy movement. The plug-in transforms audio signals into shimmering clouds, floating pads and washed-out, tape-like spaces, which are ideal for modern ambient productions, post-rock pads, dream-pop vocals and cinematic transitions.
The particular appeal of Hippie Elephant lies in the fact that the reverb here is not merely a backdrop. The plug-in utilises a playable granular engine that transforms the reverb into a living texture generator. This allows sounds not only to be expanded spatially, but to be completely transformed into something new. Guitars, vocals, synths and sound effects are thus given not just greater depth, but an atmosphere all of their own.
The FREEZE button allows you to freeze the current reverb tail and transform it into an endless texture. This is one of the plug-in’s most powerful features, as a short signal can be turned into a sustained pad or a floating ambient pad in a matter of seconds. This is particularly inspiring for sound design, swells, transitions and musical beds.
The central TIME control determines the granularity, length and density of the reverb. The spectrum ranges from tighter, more compact spaces to large, endless clouds of reverb. This allows you to decide very quickly whether Hippie Elephant should function more as a subtle texturer or as a dominant pad generator.
PITCH shifts the pitch of the reverb grains. This opens up a wide range of chorus-like detuning, shimmering reverbs and deeper, almost weightless spatial textures. This is precisely where Hippie Elephant starts to get particularly exciting, because the space itself can be musically shaped.
The TONE control functions as a tilt-style filter and helps to shape the reverb to be either darker and more nostalgic, or brighter and more open. This allows the plug-in to adapt very well to different sources and genres without hindering the creative flow.
Another special feature is the integrated TREMOLO section, which acts directly on the wet signal. The AMOUNT and SPEED controls allow you to precisely control the movement of the reverb component, from slow, hypnotic pulsations to faster fluttering. This creates spaces that do not remain static in the background, but actively breathe and come to life within the mix.
The IN/OUT sliders allow you to quickly level the signal, whilst Blend precisely adjusts the balance between the dry and processed signals. Auto Gain helps to prevent sudden changes in volume when you apply the effect more heavily. This is particularly useful as it allows you to focus more on the sound and its movement rather than on level differences.
Hippie Elephant is particularly strong on guitars, vocals, synths, pads, FX and atmospheric transitions. Anyone who enjoys floating reverbs, dreamy granular textures and slightly psychedelic spaces will find this a highly distinctive creative tool. The plug-in isn’t intended for every standard mix, but it’s just right when a sound in an arrangement needs not just to sit there, but to float
