Five-string signature bass for Ida Nielsen

After completing her studies at the Royal Danish Academy, Ida Nielsen became known to a global audience primarily as Prince’s bassist. For her virtuoso style, which blends funky slaps with driving grooves, she has long been a devotee of electric basses from the cult Braunschweig-based manufacturer Sandberg, who have custom-built the Sandberg California TM5 Ida Nielsen – a 5-string signature bass tailored to her specifications. This classically constructed bass with a fifth string features a bird’s-eye maple fingerboard, Sandberg Black Label pickups with active 2-band tone control, and indestructible Sandberg hardware in a uniform gold finish.

The Sandberg California TM5 Ida Nielsen was crafted to the specifications of the Danish bassist and impresses with its outstanding sound and elegant appearance.

A classically constructed five-string bass with elegant touches

In the construction of the California Ida Nielsen Signature Bass, Sandberg relies on traditional tonewoods in the form of an alder body and a six-bolt maple neck, complemented by a fingerboard made from precious bird’s-eye maple. The ‘Vibration Treatment’, to which the bass is subjected after completion, ensures a lively, responsive tone that is almost indistinguishable from that of a fully broken-in instrument. The pleasantly flat ‘C’ neck profile allows both fast slaps and virtuoso runs to flow effortlessly from the fingers. Alongside the large block inlays, practical, fluorescent side dots on the side of the fingerboard aid navigation between the 22 frets.

For the electrical signal conversion of her signature bass guitar, Ida Nielsen wanted high-quality pickups from the Sandberg Black Label series, with a powerful Black Label humbucker at the bridge and a classic ‘T’ single-coil in the middle position. Together with the blend control, the pickups deliver a versatile range of powerful sounds that impress with agile articulation and high transparency, whether slapping, fingerpicking or playing with a pick. The active 2-band electronics offer finely nuanced options for optimally adjusting the tone character. If required, the bass can also be played in passive mode, with the treble control acting as a passive tone control.

Gold-plated hardware, perfectly matched to the Sandberg California TM5 Ida Nielsen, rounds off the features of this five-string bass. On the body side, the strings are held in place by the Sandberg Bridge 5, whose solid construction contributes to the bass’s distinctive, rich tone and, thanks to its three-dimensional adjustment options, ensures optimal intonation as well as string action and spacing.
