With the BM-11M Low Pass Filter, Behringer presents a clone of the Moog MF-101 Low Pass Filter from the popular MoogerFooger series. Behringer has succeeded in faithfully reproducing the distinctive sound of this classic in every detail.
Essentially, this is a spin-off of the famous low-pass filter from the Minimoog, with the slope switchable between 12dB (2-pole) and 24dB (4-pole). The cutoff goes really low, allowing only the very lowest frequencies to pass through if required. The resonance seems to reach right up to the stratosphere and, at higher settings, tends to colour the sound significantly – which, in combination with the overdrive-capable audio input, is certainly a desirable effect.
The envelope follower generates a control voltage based on the level differences in the input signal across two speed settings, and uses this to modulate the cutoff parameter. This instantly creates those iconic auto-wah sounds, and what’s more, the filter sweeps always fit in rhythmically. The input stage is designed for line and guitar levels and can be overdriven; in most cases, this sounds very musical and has a harmonic character.

At this point, some might ask: why should I connect a filter box like this to my synths? For the funk! The audio input simply distorts more beautifully(!) than most gain stages on standard mixers. The filter itself has an extremely familiar character, and the envelope follower automatically adapts to the changes in sound. Ever heard of Fatboy Slim or Big Beat from the early 2000s? Yes, that’s exactly why. :) For guitarists, the BM-11M is a functional and, above all, great-sounding auto-wah that, once set up, you can use for the rest of the session.
