Data Corrupter

Earthquaker Devices Data Corrupter Modulated Monophonic Harmonizing PLL

The Data Corrupter is a monster modulation pedal that crushes your signal with pure fuzz before forcing it through an analogue modular synthesizer-style filter. The Data Corrupter consists of four sections – the Voice Mixer, Subharmonic, Frequency Modulator and Master Oscillator. Use the controls in the Voice Mixer to blend the other sections to your satisfaction. Square sets the output of the fuzz in the signal, with Subharmonic and Oscillator knobs doing the same for the corresponding sections. Overall output volume is set by the large Level knob at the top right of the pedal in this section.

The heart of the machine can be found in the Master Oscillator section. Choose an input source from the Root 3-way switch: Unison (the original octave), -1 (an octave down) and -2 (two down), which will then be multiplied by the PLL, creating one of eight intervals across three octaves (harmonies with which are selected using the rotary switch). These harmonies can be further affected in the Frequency Modulator section.

Modulation is applied to the Master Oscillator’s output in the Frequency Modulator – choose a mode with the Glide/Vibrato selector switch. Glide mode allows seamless slides between notes, while Vibrato behaves exactly as the classic effect does. Use the Rate knob to alter the intensity of this filter.

Inside the Subharmonic section a sub octave of the root is created and then divided into eight intervals across three octaves (selected by the rotary switch here). The source of this root is taken from either the square wave fuzz (Unison) or the Master Oscillator (Oscillator), selectable from the toggle switch.

Recommendations for the Data Corrupter include placement of the pedal in your chain being near the front and using neck pickups on guitars and basses. Chords and wild playing styles can quickly lead to chaos with this pedal! Finally, try to ensure your signal is as strong as possible at every stage to get the best from the Data Corrupter
