Teenage Engineering M-1After my Koss Porta Pro broke recently, I went on a search for a new pair of headphones. Although sound is often better on them, I don’t like over-ear headphones; I find they always heat up my ears and become really uncomfortable. So, I looked for something on-ear instead and ended up buying the Teenage Engineering M-1.
Although the M-1 has been out for quite some years now, there is not much info about it online. Reviews are scarce and quite mixed, so I thought I would add my two cents here and give my honest opinion.
The M-1 is a very light and, therefore, extremely comfortable pair of headphones. The cushions rest softly against your ears, adding to the comfort. I personally think the design is top-notch; I really like how they look and feel. They don’t draw too much attention on the street, yet they are so cleverly designed. It's on the streets where I wear them most.
They feel sturdy, but I wouldn’t shove them in a bag without protection. I always keep them inside a Tomtoc tech pouch, since all the headphone cases I found were way too large for this set.
I use the M-1 for listening to music and podcasts (and make a call once in a while). I haven't tried the external microphone yet, and honestly, I don't plan to. Some reviews have complained about the sound quality, but I actually like them more than my Porta Pros. They feel balanced and neutral. Because they are on-ear, there is always a compromise involved, and while they don’t sound like a $300 pair of headphones, the M-1 offers a lot of value for the money. Experiencing audio is also experiencing emotion, and the tactile vibe of this headset is helping me feel and enjoy the music, if that makes sense.
If I have one complaint, it's about the provided cable, which is a little stiff. I've replaced it with a braided cable that is much nicer to handle.
