The Epiphone SG Special P-90 offers excellent value for the price. The overall build quality is impressive, the fretwork is clean, and the finish looks great. Once properly set up, it's a fantastic-playing guitar with plenty of character.
That said, the factory setup on my guitar was very poor. The bridge was adjusted far too high, the neck had excessive backbow, and the nut slots were cut too tight, causing the strings to bind and go out of tune after bends. Fortunately, I know how to correct these issues myself, but if you don't, you may end up spending a significant amount on a professional setup just to get the guitar playing as it should.
There were also a few minor quality control issues. The truss rod cover was slightly misaligned, and the control knobs sit unusually high above the body because the potentiometers aren't properly spaced with washers. These are easy fixes and don't affect the guitar's long-term quality.
What surprised me most was finding a card in the box stating that the guitar had been inspected by the retailer. Based on the condition it arrived in, I find that hard to believe. If it really was inspected, it certainly wasn't checked thoroughly.
Despite all of this, once the setup issues were addressed, the guitar turned out to be excellent. If you're comfortable doing your own setup, it's a great buy. If you're not, be sure to factor the cost of a professional setup into the purchase price.
