Mick Rock. The Rise of David Bowie

A unique tribute to David Bowie, compiled in 2015 with his participation of Mick Rock, Bowie's photographer in the Ziggy-Stardust years.

In 1972 David Bowie released the ingenious concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and presented himself to a dismayed world as an androgynous, eyelash mascara in glittering clothes that broke down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, facts and fiction until only a sparkling spectacle of fantastic self-dramatization remained. Album and stage spectacle made the quiet Londoner one of the biggest stars in the world.

He was accompanied on this glam trip into the stratosphere of the pop sky by his compatriot, the photographer Mick Rock. Rock was artistically and personally on the same wavelength as Bowie, became part of his entourage and worked as the singer's body photographer in 1972/73.

This collection shows the best of Mick Rock's David Bowie portfolio, mostly unreleased recordings of spectacular live shows, legendary studio portraits, cover photos and pictures from promo films, backstage and on tour; they show Bowie the fictional character, but also the no less multi-faceted people beyond cool rock poses. The cover is also a tribute to Bowie's personality: it shimmers in all facets and shows a different Bowie depending on the angle of view.
