The Pioneer S-DJ50X Active DJ Monitor Speaker White is made for the discerning DJ who wants to hear his DJ mixes at their best. The DJX series speakers from Pioneer are specifically designed for DJ’s to fill the void in the market of active speakers which are typically designed to give a flat, dry response for accurate music production monitoring. DJ’s on the other hand, want a high powered, crisp clean sound with a healthy dose a bass, which generally means tossing up between PA speakers or hi-fi set-ups – neither of which really fit the bill acoustically and can require quite a lot of additional space and messing around with amps and the like. In the modern era of hi-fidelity audio, such a CD and hi-resolution MP3 files, DJ’s want to be able to hear the quality of their tunes and if you were going down the hi-fi or PA route this would mean spending considerable money!
The S-DJ50X DJ Speaker is the smallest of the new Pioneer range, but it still gives out a pumping 80 watts of bi-amped power through a 5” woofer and 1” soft dome tweeter. Even with its compact size, the S-DJ50X monitor covers a fantastic frequency range of 50Hz to 20KHz - which pretty much matches the extent most digital audio files cover and helps you to avoid the unwanted rumbling that bigger speakers produce which is inaudible in close proximity but greatly upsets the neighbours!
Because the Pioneer DJX range of active speakers are built for DJ’s, the designers have been able to concentrate on better sounding speakers rather focussing entirely on accurate flat levels. Thanks to their close relationship one of the world’s leading experts in speaker design, TAD Labs, the DJX speakers are simply brimming with technology. The 1” soft dome tweeter makes use of TAD’s proprietary DECO (Diffusion Effectual Convexity by Olson) technology, which use convex diffusers to improve the spatial separation of high frequencies and create a panoramic, wide 3D effect. The woofer is made from space-age aramid fibers, which are literally bullet-proof, and produce an extremely tight, robust, punchy sound – the maxim of modern dance music. The front-ported bass reflex system is then added to punchiness and throws out generous amounts additional low end to create warmth.
The woofer and tweeter are independently driven by a newly designed Class AB bi-amplifier, which splits the high and low signals to give the best balance of power and most accurate response. On the S-DJ50X this is 54w to the woofer and 26w to the tweeter which combined delivers a maximum SPL of 109dB. Additional bits of DJ-centric design includes and Auto Stand-By mode (so if there is no signal passing through they will turn off), a treble switch to adjust the treble balance to suit their space and style, and a choice of inputs from unbalanced RCA, to balanced jack and XLR.
