AJH Synth MiniMod Sonic XV is a filter module for modular synthesizers in Eurorack format. It is based on a diode based 4-pin filter cascade circuit, as used in the Musonics Sonic V synthesizer. The sound is very different from filter cascades based on transistors. In addition to the regular 24dB low pass output, a 6dB low pass output, as well as a band pass output with full CV control of the resonance was added. With two integrated wavefolders, the Sonic XV module can do much more than"just" filter.
Two wave folders extend the module's versatility many times over. A breakpoint-based wavefolder is located in the input stage, whose drive can be controlled either manually or via control voltage. A second Waveshaper is connected to the resonance circuit, which adds distortion and wave shaping to the signal in the resonance loop, whose drive can also be controlled manually or via control voltage. A wet/dry crossfader allows the desired dosage of resonance waveshaping between 0 and 100%.
The additional functions extend the module's capabilities in an astonishing way - it can do much more than just a normal filter, because the waveshapers can be used to add further harmonics and change the shape of waveforms instead of simply "filtering" them. Thanks to four independent CV inputs, extremely complex filtering and waveshaping sounds are possible.
