The new MPK Mini Plus | Akai Professional
Akai Professional MIDI Keyboard at a glance
The MPK Mini Plus from Akai is a combination of USB keyboard controller, CV/gate interface and step sequencer. The keyboard with 37 mini keys is a newly developed Gen 2 Dynamic Keybed keyboard, which, despite its size, is velocity-sensitive and, above all, easy to play. In its capacity as a USB keyboard controller, the MPK Mini Plus offers eight rotary knobs and a joystick that can be assigned to any parameter in a DAW, making it easy to use the software. The eight color-coded and velocity-sensitive pads offer a defined pressure point and are ideal for dynamically recording percussions and firing off samples; with Note Repeat and Full Level even MPC pad features are integrated. Below the knob are the transport buttons, which provide direct access to the main DAW functions such as recording, rewinding, stopping and playback. As playing aids, there is a simple chord function that remembers the last notes pressed simultaneously and an arpeggiator with an extended repertoire of playback patterns in the range of 1-4 octaves and shuffle. Thanks to the MIDI inputs and outputs, the master keyboard can communicate with external equipment and also functions as a USB/MIDI interface.
An insider tip for live hardware screwdrivers
If you operate the MPK Mini Plus with a USB power supply, it runs stand-alone without the need for a computer. This is where the device really comes into its own for experienced users, as it is a MIDI master keyboard that can be used to play rack expanders and desktop synthesizers and a converter from MIDI (and of course USB) to CV/Gate control voltages, plus mod output and clock connections to trigger a Eurorack modular system or old analogue synthesizers. The best for last: a polyphonic step sequencer is hidden between the Display and transport buttons! If you need a separate sequencer for a synthesizer that can be played via MIDI respectively CV/Gate, you should take a look at the MPK Mini Plus.
