The ISE-NIN Voice from Black Corporation is a single voice taken from what is arguably the most sought-after analog synthesizer of all time, the Roland Jupiter-8, presented here in Eurorack format. Strictly speaking, this module represents a single extracted voice from the manufacturer’s own polyphonic rack synthesizer of the same name. All sound-relevant controls of the original instrument are also found on this synth voice. An arpeggiator or preset memory is not included. Since the module is designed for monophonic play, all voice modes from the rack version are unnecessary. In terms of sound, it guarantees fat Roland-style basses, epic leads, sharp sync sounds, and metallic timbres.
The discrete circuitry leaves nothing to be desired and fully captures the sound character of the 30 kg original from 1981. Two oscillators with the unmistakable Roland tone form the foundation of every Jupiter-8 sound. Oscillator 1 can be switched among four foot positions and offers triangle, sawtooth, pulse, and square waveforms. The amount of cross-modulation is continuously adjustable. The frequency of Oscillator 2, which even extends into the LFO range, is freely adjustable; it also supports hard and soft sync and provides sine, sawtooth, pulse, or noise waveforms. The pitch can be modulated for either or both oscillators via LFO or envelope, the latter being ideal for classic sync sounds. The pulse width can be set manually or modulated by LFO or envelope, which is typical of classic Roland synthesizers. After mixing, both oscillators pass into the distinctive 12/24 dB low-pass filter with an upstream, resonance-free high-pass filter. This filter is a dream for sound designers and can rightly be considered a milestone in Roland’s synthesizer history. The envelope, LFO, and key tracking are permanently assigned to modulate the filter. The end of the signal path is formed by the VCA, which is shaped by the second envelope and can also be modulated by the LFO to create tremolo effects.
The main part of the modulation is performed by two ADSR envelopes, which are permanently assigned to the filter and VCA. Keyfollow can be activated separately for each envelope. This parameter enables the modulation of
