Catalyst Audio Model 158 is an oscillator module for modular synthesizers in Eurorack format. The module is based on Model 158 from the Buchla 100 series and has an analog dual oscillator whose core is built exclusively with hand-selected transistors. The waveform of each oscillato can fade independently between sine and sawtooth and the frequencies can be continuously tuned from the ultrasonic range to the LFO range. Two outputs are available per VCO. Individual control voltage inputs are also available for exponential frequency modulation. 1V/octave inputs are available to play the Model 158, but either the associated encoder knobs or the 1V/oct input can be used. To use both at the same time, the Catalyst Audio Model 156 is required.
The Buchla 100 series is the best known representative of the "West Coast synthesis" and was developed by Don Buchla in the sixties. Catalyst Audio's modules are true to original reproductions of the originals and are built completely discreetly from hand-picked components.
