Problem and Solution
Compact and easily transportable drum sets are becoming increasingly popular. Most of these so-called street or jam kits come with a 16-inch bass drum, and this is where the problem arises. Bass drum heads were usually only available in sizes starting at 18 inches, and many 16-inch bass drums are actually converted floor toms. On these, a bass drum head does not fit without modification. The American manufacturer Evans offers a solution with new 16-inch bass drum heads from their most popular series.
Bass Hoops or Tom Hoops?
The 16-inch size is not the only special feature of these new drumheads. The skins from the EMAD, EQ4, GENERA, and EQ3 series each come in two versions. The “Bass Hoop” heads fit regular 16-inch bass drums. The “Tom Hoop” heads are designed to fit converted floor toms.
Evans EQ3
The EQ3 heads are made from a single layer of Mylar film with a thickness of 7.5 mil. An integrated damping ring eliminates unwanted harmonics and shortens sustain.
