The Fame JB Burl Top Trans Charcoal at a glance
With the JB Burl Top, the Czech luthiers at Fame present an exceptional 4-string J-style bass with plenty to offer. The classic offset body shape provides an instantly familiar playing feel, while pickups from the renowned US manufacturer Seymour Duncan deliver an assertive yet versatile tone, ready for almost any genre. The JB Burl Top also impresses with premium appointments such as original Schaller tuners and a beautifully figured burl poplar top.
Alder body with elegant burl top
Visually, the Fame JB is a true standout. Its traditional alder body is capped with a two-piece burl poplar top, featuring striking grain patterns and precise bookmatching for a symmetrical, one-of-a-kind look. Although the choice of top wood is somewhat unusual for this style, the JB stays true to its classic roots, foregoing full binding so that the delicate transition from top to body remains visible. Naturally, proven ergonomic features such as a generous tummy cut on the back and a comfortable armrest on the front are also present.
Roasted maple neck & rosewood fingerboard
The roasted maple neck reflects Fame’s commitment to premium tonewoods. Only select rift-sawn maple is used, with continuous annual rings running from headstock to heel for enhanced stability against environmental changes. Its slim C-profile offers a comfortable base for precise fretting across the 20-fret rosewood fingerboard. With a classic nut width of 38.1 mm and a 10-inch fingerboard radius, the feel will be instantly familiar to fans of traditional J-style basses.
Powerful Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups
The JB Burl Top is fitted with two Seymour Duncan SJB-3 Quarter Pound single-coil pickups, known for their punch and tonal flexibility. Featuring enlarged Alnico V pole pieces and hotter coil windings, these pickups deliver impressive output and a defined attack, yet can also produce smoother, more subtle tones when needed. The electronics remain true to the classic JB layout, with individual volume controls for each pickup and a shared treble control.
Fame PB Burl Top Trans Blue - Test report on guitar-player.com
Excerpt:"The Fame PB and JB Burl Top electric basses deliver what they promise: a classic feel with a familiar character and a broad spectrum of potential sounds with clearly recognizable DNA of the historical models. The absolute highlight: the quarter pounder from Seymour Duncan. Rarely have I heard a passive bass with so much oomph that you'd be forgiven for thinking there were active electronics under the hood! Nevertheless, the PB and JB models basically remain true to their genre, so Preci and Jazz fans know exactly what they're getting into here."
