Gibson's Holy Grail
The legendary'59 is considered the culmination of the classic Gibson era of the late 1950s and is still known today as an iconic instrument in the history of rock. Last but not least, Gibson's 1959 production series combined all the improvements made since the first Les Paul electric guitar, from the flexibly adjustable Gibson ABR Tune-o-Matic bridge to the humbucker developed by Seth Lover and the incomparable'double carve' top shaping. As part of the True Historic Series, the Gibson Custom Shop went in search of the original production steps of the 59 to revive the classic as authentically as possible.
For the True Historic Series, the Gibson Custom Shop uses the knowledge gathered from the Collector's Choice models to analyze and recreate all components of the instrument from the plastic'poker chip' to the texture of the lacquer on a molecular level. Accordingly, the pickguard, poker chip and M69 pickup rings are not only historically correct, but also show the aging process of the originals over time.
Another new feature of the True Historic models is the original double carving of the ceiling in the form of manual finishing for the authentic ceiling structure. Wet sanding was introduced as a further classic manufacturing step. This means that during the application of the nitrocellulose finish a wet intermediate sanding is carried out and has the classic feeling of well maintained originals.
The distinctive neck profile of the 1959 Les Paul is characterised by the mixture of the agile playing feeling of thinner necks with sufficient strength for articulative bends. For this purpose, some well-preserved 59s from the collections of well-known Gibson collectors were measured in terms of neck thickness, shaping and material and reproduced with the classic profile. The key to success here is the minimum thickness of 0.9 inches on the 1st fret and one inch of wood behind the 12th fret.
Matching sounds are provided by the custom Bucker pickups wound according to the proven P.A.F. recipe. These humbuckers, wound by hand with copper wire in AWG42 wire thickness, have Alnico III magnets and, like the original, have two coilformers wound slightly differently. Of course, both pickups have the classic nickel cover.
