Buy 1/4 Classical Guitars for Children at MUSIC STORE

Choosing the right children’s guitar starts with the correct instrument size. Ideally, young beginners should try out different models in person to find a suitable 1/4 classical guitar. If a guitar teacher has already been chosen, their recommendation should also be taken into account. If that is not possible, the following tips will help you choose a suitable classical guitar for children.

1/4 classical guitars for beginners

1/4 classical guitars are generally suitable for pre-school children aged around 5 to 6 years with a height of approx. 1.10 to 1.30 m. These instruments usually have a scale length of 47 to 49 cm and are just under 80 cm in overall length. Since many children only start learning guitar a little later, the selection in this size is often smaller than in larger sizes.

Is a children’s guitar a toy or a real instrument?

A good children’s guitar should not be a toy, but a proper instrument. Branded instruments, for example from Ortega, are usually tuning-stable, well intonated, well made and easy to play. This makes learning easier, supports ear training and helps maintain motivation. However, these models are usually priced in the three-digit range, regardless of size.

There are also much more affordable classical guitars for children for getting started. These can be a sensible option for initial try-outs. However, if regular lessons and long-term progress are the goal, a higher-quality instrument is usually the better choice.

Laminate or solid wood?

Although guitars with a solid top usually offer greater tonal potential, a 1/4 classical guitar made from laminated wood is often the more practical choice. Laminated woods are more affordable, more robust and less sensitive in everyday use with children. At this instrument size, the tonal difference is usually still of secondary importance.

Looks matter too

Especially when choosing a starter guitar for children, appearance also plays an important role. An instrument a child likes will often increase motivation to practise. So if there is a clear preference – for example, for a red guitar – it should be taken seriously where possible. Children often enjoy playing instruments they can also identify with visually.
