A 3/4 classical guitar is a slightly larger classical guitar for children and young players. It is especially suitable for players who have outgrown a 1/2 classical guitar but are not yet ready for a full-size 4/4 guitar. This format is mainly intended for children aged around 8 to 12 years, depending on height, arm length and hand span, and makes an ideal transition instrument for the next stage of learning.
While the standard scale length of a 4/4 guitar — meaning the length of the vibrating string — is around 650 mm, a 3/4 classical guitar usually has a scale length of between 580 and 610 mm. Thanks to the shorter scale, less force is generally needed to fret the strings. At the same time, the slimmer neck is easier to grip. The narrower and shallower body also makes the instrument easier to reach and handle for younger guitarists.
Parents and teachers should make sure to choose the right guitar size for the child. A model that is too large or too small can make playing technique harder to develop and may even cause physical discomfort due to poor ergonomics. Ideally, the child should be able to try the instrument before buying. A correctly sized guitar supports progress and helps make playing more comfortable and enjoyable.
