While large resonance chambers in the alder body significantly reduce the weight of the guitar and at the same time shape the sound with a pleasant airy timbre, the well-known design with wide Cutaways and fast "RG j.custom Super Wizard" neck creates excellent conditions for the easy implementation of accomplished playing techniques. Due to the flexible HSH pickup setup with pickups from DiMarzio, the j.custom RG8870 electric guitar convinces at the guitar amplifier with a wide spectrum of sounds, ranging from vintage-inspired cleans and Overdrive to modern high-gain distortion. Of course, Ibanez completes the Axe Design Lab j.custom RG8870-BRE Black Rutile with a tuning stable Lo-Pro Edge Double-Locking Tremolo and precise Gotoh tuners.

In designing the Axe Design Lab j.custom RG8870, Ibanez pays special attention not only to excellent handling of the guitar but also to a particularly lively and resonant sound. Large-scale resonance chambers not only significantly reduce the weight of the alder body so that the guitar does not pull on the shoulder even after long gigs, but also color the sound with an airy response and subtle acoustic timbre. The five-piece maple-wenge neck promises excellent playing characteristics thanks to the flat "RG j.custom Super Wizard" profile with just 17 mm of wood under the first fret, so that even complex playing techniques come off with ease. In addition to the intensively-grained maple top in upscale AAA quality, the elaborate tree-of-life inlay of the Macassar ebony fingerboard underscores the noble look of the electric guitar.

The DiMarzio PAF 36th Anniversary humbucker in neck position is clearly oriented to its eponymous ancestors of the golden era and convinces with an authentic vintage sound that can be shaped by the touch alone thanks to the excellent dynamics. In the bridge position, the powerful DiMarzio The Tone Zone humbucker provides juicy drive and distortion tones with razor-sharp articulation and tremendous punch, while the True Velvet single coil in the middle position contributes bell-like tones. In addition to the 5-way blade switch that selects the pickup in the typical Ibanez combinations, and the general volume and tone pots, the j.custom RG8870 guitar offers an additional mini-switch that expands repertoire by splitting the neck and bridge humbuckers and characterful single-coil sounds.
