The Kurzweil K2088 is a powerful workstation that combines synthesizer, sequencer, master keyboard, and controller. Its 88-key Fatar TP/40L hammer-action keyboard is semi-weighted, velocity-sensitive, and equipped with aftertouch. With four synthesis engines (Dynamic VAST, 6-Operator FM, KB3, and VA1), the K2088 delivers an enormous variety of professional sounds. Cascade Mode adds further flexibility by allowing one layer to be routed through the DSP of another, with up to 32 consecutive layers possible. A clever detail is the VARIATION button, which provides an alternate version for every sound. The sound engine includes 2 GB of factory samples and another 2 GB of space for user-imported samples. There are more than 2000 factory sounds, 4000 user memory slots, 500 factory combinations, and 4000 user combinations. To refine these sounds, 32 studio-quality effects such as reverb, chorus, tremolo, delay, distortion, and EQ can be applied in chains and stored with programs. With its 256-voice polyphony, no note is lost even in fast passages or dense arrangements. This generous polyphony also benefits the 16-part internal sequencer, which lets you compose professional-sounding songs directly on the K2088.
The K2088 is designed for intuitive operation, appealing to sound designers and live performers alike. Nine assignable buttons, knobs, and faders provide direct control over sound parameters, including effects and synthesis models. A large graphic display and dedicated category buttons (piano, strings, synth, ensemble, etc.) make navigation and workflow much easier. For expressive playing, the K2088 features a ribbon controller that can modulate filters, add reverb, or bend pitch with a simple finger swipe. Each of the 16 parts has its own arpeggiator and riff generator, making it easy to create basslines, melodies, and accompaniment patterns. As a 16-zone MIDI controller, the K2088 is also well suited for integrating external MIDI gear or controlling sounds in a DAW. The keyboard can be used in split or layer mode, allowing multiple sounds to be combined or distributed across the key range.
The K2088 offers extensive connection options. There are four pedal inputs (volume, expression, sustain, and footswitch), two balanced stereo output pairs for mixers, interfaces, or PA systems, and a stereo input for external sources such as smartphones or CD players. External signals can also be processed with the K2088’s effects. A headphone output supports silent practice or quick monitoring. The instrument connects to a computer via USB and can serve as a master keyboard with DAW software. MIDI in and out ports ensure compatibility with expanders, sequencers, and other MIDI equipment.
