The Mesa Boogie California Tweed 2:20 1x10" Combo is a guitar amplifier that stands out for its simplicity and organic tone. Inspired by the classic Tweed circuits of the 1960s, it features two 6V6 tubes in the power section, while the preamp is driven by five 12AX7s and one 12AT7 tube. While the California Tweed embraces a streamlined, vintage design, it doesn’t compromise on usability or comfort. The front panel keeps things classic with just two inputs (Low/Normal), a gain knob, a traditional 3-band EQ (treble, mid, bass), presence control, master volume, and a MultiWatt switch to reduce output from 20 watts to 10 or 1 watt. Around the back, you'll find three speaker outputs (2x 4 Ohm, 1x 8 Ohm), a reverb control with footswitch input, and an effects loop.

Simple construction, full tube warmth in the output

Despite its straightforward design, the Mesa Boogie California Tweed 2:20 Combo 1x10" delivers a full-bodied all-tube tone. The preamp section features five 12AX7 tubes and one 12AT7, while the power amp draws its output from a pair of 6V6 tubes, delivering up to 20 watts of power. Using the versatile Multi-Watt control, the output can be scaled down to 10 watts or even 1 watt – without sacrificing tone quality. In 20-watt mode, the amp runs as a 2x6V6 Class A/B pentode with fixed bias. In 10-watt mode, it switches to a 2x6V6 Class A/B triode, also with fixed bias. At 1 watt, the circuit operates as a 1x6V6 pentode with cathode bias. This flexible design ensures the California Tweed maintains consistent tonal richness and responsiveness across all power settings. With its warm, organic tube sound, the California Tweed 2:20 Combo faithfully captures the spirit of classic '60s vintage amps.

It also excels when used with external effects – thanks to a buffered effects loop, pedal integration is clean and reliable, ensuring seamless operation when switching between tones.
