The Mesa Boogie Recto-Verb Twenty-Five Guitar Valve Amplifier Head is classic looking vinyl-covered amp head, and a bigger brother to the popular Mini Rectifier lunchbox. This amp head gets its name from the long-spring reverb hidden behind the face, and controlled from the rear of the unit. This reverb is an all-tube effect, independently controlled on each channel. The Recto-Verb’s reverb is known to compliment guitarists using low to medium gain in their tone makeup, which just so happens to be an easily achievable goal using either of the channels on this head. For those wishing to extend the range of this head further there is an all-tube fully buffered effects (FX) loop (wired in series) to take advantage of.
The Recto-Verb head contains Mesa’s Multi-Watt technology meaning each channel is independently assignable to two wattage settings – 10W or 25W. These choices carry their own characteristics and circuitry, and so offer two distinct voices. The 10W power mode has been wired for Triode operation, producing a sweeter and more vintage sound. 25W power mode has wider all-round headroom, bold attack and an unexpectedly high output.
Channel 1 switches between Clean and Pushed modes.
Channel 2 switches between Vintage and Modern modes.
The Clean mode sparkles above while remaining rich and warm in the lows. Experiment with the drive and power modes to make it misbehave. Pushed provides the next gain stage of the head, inviting aggressive rhythm figures, crunching chords or searing mid-gain solos. Vintage is possibly the sound most often associated with these amp models, a thick, high gain with a broad harmonic spread. Push this setting into 10W mode to round out the attack envelope and produce a voice-like tone. Finally, the Modern mode is the angriest of the selections, with a stunning attack and hi-mid jump which gives way to an uncommon amount of gain in such an otherwise responsive tone. This is the only choice for the heaviest moments.
