With the Musician Sound Design 66 Proto Wah Wah, the Cologne-based effects company is sending a replacement circuit board into the race that elicits the authentic vintage sound from Wah Wah effect pedals. Musician Sound Design uses historically correct components, including carbon film resistors, foil capacitors and an induction coil with the original core material.
Musician Sound Design 66 Proto Wah WahI bought the MSD 67 board last year, and it blew all my other wahs away. I've had countless wahs, countless custom boards and many inductors from top builders. I wouldn't part with the 67 equipped wah, and when I saw that the 66 was available, I had to buy it.
It's a completely different animal. Absolutely stunning in every way, but the nature of it is totally different. Whereas the 67 hits the wild sweep of psychedelia (whilst still sounding open and organic), the 66 is nearer to the YouTube Del Casher demo. It is balanced whether you're playing at the top or the bottom of your fretboard. It's almost a more sanitised and balanced incarnation of the Clyde tone. It's kind of pre psychedelic. It's a beautiful wah, but not the wild psychedelic tone. More Pink Floyd 'Apples and oranges' rather than The Cream 'White Room'.
MSD are the business. Really cool to deal with, and the wahs are flawless.
