The cassotto is a special accordion construction that changes the sound character of certain registers. In a cassotto accordion, part of the reed plates are placed in a wooden chamber (the cassotto). This chamber dampens and modifies the sound, resulting in a warmer, rounder and less overtone-rich tone. Cassotto registers are often used for solo and orchestral playing as they offer a particularly expressive and singing tone. Only selected high-end accordions have a cassotto.
