The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Fretless in 3-Colour Sunburst is a 4-string fretless bass guitar that combines the sound of an upright bass with the style and playability of a classic Jazz Bass.
The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Fretless features an instantly recognisable Agathis body that is paired with a “C”-shape, 34” scale Maple neck. Topping the neck is a lined fretless Ebonol fingerboard that is as smooth to play as it is good to look at. This choice of woods and features helps to produce a lightweight, comfortable bass that is a joy to play.
The body of the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Fretless is fitted with a pair of Fender-Designed single-coil Jazz Bass pickups that are accompanied by individual pickup-specific volume controls and a master tone control. This setup means that a wide variety of classic fretless and Jazz Bass tones are incredibly easy to obtain and never far away. Joining the pickup selection is a standard four-saddle bridge and a set of open-gear tuners, while the lack of pickguard allows the 3-Colour Sunburst finish to shine through.

It sounds just like it should, and feels just right. As is usually the case, the action was set up a bit high, but with simple truss rod and bridge adjustments, I was able to set it really low, and get lots of the fretless "mwah". The strings it came with were surprisingly fresh and playable.
The ebonol fretboard feels and looks great. It sure is far more durable than any wood, but round-wound strings WILL leave their print upon it, which is apparent immediately. After just a few minutes of playing I could see the strings winding imprinted in the fretboard. Not a big deal, but it will eventually make the fretboard look dull and hazy. I replaced the stock round-wound strings with nylon-wound flats anyway.
The pickups are nothing extraordinary, but very decent-sounding. They deliver the unmistakeable jazz bas tone very well. Im already thinking of replacing them with an EMG JVX set or some Bartolinis with an EQ, but its not because the stock pickups are any bad, but simply because I like to tinker with different pickups, and because I feel that this bass is well worth it.
