Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass S pecial SS, Candy Apple Red I purchased this to try out short scale bass. Neck pickup is fine and sound is full, bridge pickup a little weak, so I haven't used it much. Handling is fine and this bass is really comfortable to play, low weight good balance. Small imperfections such as an incorrectly mounted knob for the strap might not be a big deal, but I changed the output jack which broke after a few times use. Had I not been able to change this myself this would have been really annoying, requiring the instrument to be returned and fixed by warranty.
As far as short scale basses go, there aren't really that many options, so going with Squier is always a good bet. This one is quite comfortable, with a thin neck and light body. The craftsmanship is great and the only bad thing about it is the jazz pickup, which is extremely low output. The Precision pickup is great, though, and you can always replace the Jazz one anyway. It's a great entry level bass and a later transition to a real Fender later, like the Mustang that is also short scale.
