Some studios are renowned not only for the legendary recordings made within their walls but also for their role in shaping the direction of music history. Within those walls, something close to magic can happen. Ask Aretha Franklin, Etta James, or Otis Redding—they’d surely agree there’s something extraordinary about that small studio in the rural town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This is the home of true Southern soul: Fame Studios.

Under the direction of legendary Swampers guitarist Jimmy Johnson, and using the original recording gear and microphone placements from the studio’s heyday, the Southern Soul EZX brings the unmistakable sound of soul back to life. The result is a collection of drum sounds that are dense, warm, slightly gritty, and deeply atmospheric—perfectly capturing the unique ambience of Fame Studios.

The expansion includes five full drum kits from Ludwig, Gretsch, Pearl, and Sakae, recorded with two distinct setups: one using period-correct mono miking, the other in traditional stereo. A unique recording method also captures the natural bleed of the drums into the vocal, guitar, piano, and upright bass microphones – an iconic Fame Studios technique that adds a vivid, live-band feel to the sound.

Produced by Grammy-winning Glenn Rosenstein (known for his work with James Taylor, U2, and Ziggy Marley) and engineered by Jeff Balding (whose credits include Faith Hill, Brad Paisley, and Celine Dion), the sessions feature drummer Chad Cromwell, best known for playing with artists like Neil Young and Joe Walsh. His performances, both in drum sampling and included MIDI grooves, bring a distinctly soulful energy to the pack.
