Elektron Syntakt drum machine with hybrid sound generation

The Elektron Syntakt at a glance

With the Syntakt, Elektron presents a fully-featured drum machine with hybrid sound generation, the capability to function as a synthesiser and, of course, a sophisticated sequencer. This compact instrument, which has the same dimensions as the Digitakt and Digitone, offers twelve tracks, divided into eight digital and four analogue tracks. These tracks are populated with ‘Machines’ and ultimately saved in the drumkit. The Machines – of which there are 37 different types in total – are specialised for specific sounds and are highly customisable. Whether you choose to fill a drum kit with just kick drums, twelve synth tracks, funky percussion, a storm of metallic cymbals and hi-hats, or the typical mix of various sounds is entirely up to the user. You can look forward to familiar sounds, plenty of new ones, tremendous musicality and plenty of scope for experimentation. The famous Elektron sequencer, complete with parameter locks and plenty of programmable dynamics, also plays a key role in this.

Elektron Syntakt: eight digital and four analogue tracks

[Drum]sounds for the coming decades!

The twelve tracks available simultaneously are divided into eight digital and four analogue tracks, which are loaded with a ‘Machine’ and are then specialised for specific sounds or categories. The eight digital tracks offer 11 Machines, divided into 1x bass drum, 2x snare drum, 1x cymbal/hi-hat, 1x percussion, 1x clap and 5x tonal synth. Each track also features a distortion unit, a multimode filter, a band-pass filter and two assignable LFOs. The distortion unit and both filters in the digital Machines are also digitally implemented. The four analogue tracks are initially divided into three drum tracks and one cymbal track. For the drum tracks, this means a selection of 16 Machines, comprising 6x bass drum, 4x snare drum, 2x rimshot, 2x dual VCO synth, 1x impulse and 1x noise generator. The cymbal track features 15 machines specialising in metallic sounds: 5 x hi-hat, 3 x cymbal, 2 x cowbell, 1 x impulse and 1 x noise generator. Each of the four analogue tracks also features an analogue distortion unit and an analogue multimode filter, as well as two assignable LFOs. Tonal synth and dual VCO synth machines? Yes, the Syntakt offers 7 machines designed for typical synthesiser sounds; two of which are even analogue! All tracks are given the finishing touch with the superb-sounding digital effects Delay and Reverb. These are highly customisable and range from subtle to club-ready to cinematic. By this point at the latest, it becomes clear that the Syntakt is so much more than just a drum machine: in Keyboard Mode, these tonally playable sound-generation models reveal their full potential and bring the device into the realm of grooveboxes.

Live sequencer!

The Syntakt’s sequencer is perfectly suited to live performance, quick to programme and, above all, easy to learn. Real-time operation and rock-solid timing are the magic words behind Elektron’s recipe for success. A total of 128 patterns can be saved. Each pattern can have a maximum length of up to 64 steps (4 bars); furthermore, each track can be assigned its own step length and scaling. Naturally, the Syntakt also supports parameter locks, allowing individual parameters to be locked to one or more steps without permanently altering the sound. Other features, such as Keyboard Mode with 36 scales, Shuffle, Micro Timing and programmable trigger probability, effectively round off the range of creative possibilities. In addition to the 12 internal tracks, there are four MIDI tracks for external MIDI equipment, such as a desktop synth. The tracks are playable or programmable with four-voice polyphony, allow eight CC parameters to be addressed, and an LFO can be freely assigned. Should you ever require more MIDI tracks, the internal tracks can also be converted into MIDI tracks.

OS.1.20 with new synth engines

With OS 1.20, there have been some significant changes to Syntakt! Alongside a number of bug fixes and minor improvements, the main focus of this update is on the two new synth engines.

SY Raw is an analogue machine with two oscillators that can be detuned against each other and a noise generator. OSC2 can be controlled using a decay envelope. If required, the phase can be reset with each note, which is particularly beneficial for bass sounds. Both oscillators can be ring-modulated and this synth has its own dedicated overdrive.

SY Swarm is a digital synthesiser featuring the famous Supersaw. Surrounding a fundamental oscillator are six symmetrically arranged, detunable oscillators. These are modulated via a decay envelope, three LFOs and a noise generator to create those popular rave sounds. Naturally, SY Swarm also has a separate overdrive.
