Buy crash cymbals for drum kits, stage and studio

What is a crash cymbal?

The crash cymbal is a central drum cymbal in a drum kit and is mainly used for accents, fills, transitions and dynamic highlights. It creates a short, explosive sound that responds quickly and adds extra energy to the groove.

Crash cymbals are typically played with a strong stroke, but depending on the model they can also be used with a more subtle and dynamic touch. They mark song sections, emphasise breaks, open up choruses and add powerful accents in rock, pop, jazz, funk, metal and many other styles.

Most crash cymbals range in size from 14 to 20 inches. Models in 16" and 18" are especially common, as they offer a good balance of response, volume, attack and sustain. Smaller crash cymbals respond faster and sound more compact, while larger models deliver more volume, depth and body.

What does a crash cymbal sound like?

A crash cymbal produces a fast, open and usually bright accent sound. The sound rises immediately and decays for different lengths of time depending on size, weight and material. This makes the crash cymbal especially useful for musical markers, dynamic build-ups and energetic transitions.

Thinner crash cymbals respond very quickly, often sound softer and can be controlled well even at lower volumes. They are particularly suitable for studio work, jazz, pop and dynamic playing. Heavier crash cymbals deliver more volume, stronger projection and longer sustain, making them a good choice for rock, metal and loud live situations.

The material also shapes the sound clearly. B20 bronze often sounds warmer, more complex and richer in overtones, while B8 bronze is usually brighter, more direct and more assertive. Hand-hammered crash cymbals often have a more individual character, while machine-made models provide a very consistent response.

How do you find the right crash cymbal?

The right crash cymbal depends on the musical style, playing technique, band volume and existing drum setup. If you are looking for a versatile crash cymbal, a 16" or 18" medium crash is often a reliable choice. These models offer enough attack for clear accents while remaining controlled across different dynamic levels.

For rock, pop and metal, crash cymbals with strong projection, fast attack and enough volume are usually preferred. Brilliant or heavier models cut through loud band contexts more easily and deliver a clear, powerful accent. Series such as Zildjian A, Paiste Signature or modern AAX and 2002 models are typical examples.

For jazz, blues, soul or acoustic music, thinner, darker and warmer crash cymbals are often more interesting. They respond more sensitively to dynamic playing, provide softer overtones and blend more naturally into quieter setups. Series such as Meinl Byzance or darker K and HHX models are especially popular in this area.

It is also important to match the crash cymbal to the rest of the cymbal setup. A crash cymbal should sound distinct from the hi-hat, ride and other crash cymbals, while still fitting musically into the overall setup. Many drummers combine a smaller, faster crash with a larger, fuller crash to cover different accent colours in the kit.

Which crash cymbal brands and series are popular?

Some of the best-known crash cymbal manufacturers include Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, Paiste and Fame. Each brand offers series for different sound preferences, playing styles and budgets – from bright, modern rock crashes to dark, complex studio and jazz cymbals.

Zildjian is known for series such as A, A Custom, K Custom and K Custom Dark. Zildjian A Custom crash cymbals are especially popular with rock and pop drummers because they deliver clear, brilliant and assertive accents. For darker sound colours, models such as the Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash are a strong choice.

Sabian offers versatile crash cymbals for stage, studio and modern drum kits with series such as AAX and HHX. Paiste is known for especially clear, brilliant and assertive sounds with series such as Signature, 2002 and Rude, which are frequently used in rock and loud live contexts.

Meinl offers a wide selection of hand-hammered crash cymbals with warm, dark and complex sound colours in the Byzance Series. Fame also offers attractive B20 models for drummers looking for musical sounds and strong value for money.

The ideal crash cymbal should respond quickly, decay musically and fit your existing setup. If you need clear, loud accents, choose a more brilliant or heavier model. If you prefer more warmth, depth and dynamics, thinner, darker or hand-hammered crash cymbals are often the better musical solution.
