The second generation of the professional all-in-one workstation

The Roland FANTOM EX is a powerful, impressive synthesiser workstation featuring a sequencer, sampler, audio interface and extensive synthesiser functions. In its generously sized and expandable sound memory, Roland has literally immortalised a ‘best of’ selection from over 40 years of its own synthesiser history and integrated its latest, high-quality sound engines: Zen-Core, ACB, SuperNATURAL, VTW Organ and V-Piano. In addition to several synthesis technologies that can be used simultaneously, it’s worth bearing in mind that the FANTOM EX’s analogue multimode filter is likely to be the icing on the cake for many sounds. The sequencer offers real-time, TR/step sequencing and a clip sequencer. One-shots and loops can be easily triggered via pads in the sampler and incorporated into your own creations.

Another highlight of the FANTOM EX is the scene memory, organised into four banks of 128 memory slots each. These act as quick-access creative memory slots and capture everything you’re currently working on. Whether it’s a handful of patterns, a song you’ve started, a sound still in development, various settings linked to your current project in the DAW; or even all of these at once; handwritten notes and ‘I’ve got to leave it on because I can’t save’ are definitely a thing of the past. Anyone who has already worked with Roland instruments will quickly realise that the FANTOM EX’s operation has been completely rethought – not only thanks to the uncluttered interface but, above all, the highly intuitive menu navigation – and leads to results more quickly.

Sounds & Synthesis

Roland has really splashed out on the FANTOM EX, equipping its flagship model with over 7,000 sounds and more than 90 drum kits, as well as the state-of-the-art sound engines Zen-Core, ACB, SuperNATURAL, VTW Organ and V-Piano. A vast array of synthesiser sounds, including well-known classics, strings, organ, piano, guitar, brass, choir, wind instruments and more; the selection on the FANTOM EX is truly impressive! The FANTOM EX comes with eleven sound expansions as standard: JUPITER-8, SH-101 and JX-3P are based on the popular ACB engine. The newer ZEN-Core synthesis powers the n/zyme, JD-800, JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, JX-8P and SH-101 expansions. From the series popular with pianists, the SuperNATURAL engine, which is popular with pianists, come the German Concert V-Piano Expansion 01 and Acoustic Piano 3. In addition, the memory contains countless sample-based sounds covering almost every musical style. Via the Roland Cloud provides access to further content and sound engines. The characteristic Roland sound architecture has been retained in that each sound can still consist of up to four parts. In the FANTOM EX, however, these parts correspond to a complete, comprehensive synthesiser voice, complete with its own oscillator and filter models, envelopes, modulation assignments and, of course, its own volume and pan settings. A dual LFO is also available for each of the four parts; this not only offers the standard waveforms, with and without BPM synchronisation, but also allows you to create your own waveforms manually. Let’s do the maths: 16 tracks with up to 8 LFOs per sound; 128 LFOs simultaneously! Anyone who enjoys creating new sounds from scratch will find the ultimate source of modulation ideas here. The advanced architecture allows you to create sounds using a modular approach: take, for example, the SuperSaw oscillator (familiar from the JP-8000) and combine it with the Juno filter; what was previously the preserve of modular enthusiasts is now available here as a saveable preset! Different synthesis technologies can be set for each sound and part, so nothing stands in the way of, for example, a layered sound comprising a roaring organ, bells shrouded in delay and a crisp bass.

Effects

A total of 93 multi-effects are just waiting to be used individually or in parallel or series to alter and enhance the sounds produced for each part. The selection of delay, reverb, chorus, flanger and distortion – truly unique effects with a ‘wow’ factor – should leave nothing to be desired. The FANTOM EX also has more than enough power to process complex effects chains for each of the 16 tracks without running out of steam. In addition, each part has its own equaliser. The master compressor is located at the main output. The analogue filter holds a special place, offering four different filter types (LPF 1/2/3, BPF, HPF & PKG) complete with drive. The filter can be assigned to individual tracks, the main output, a return from the DAW or the analogue inputs. It is therefore not only an advanced element of sound generation, but also a standalone effect for adding the finishing touches to sounds where needed. The 32-band stereo vocoder provides a specialised vocal effect. This can be set to a fixed oscillator frequency or used with the numerous presets. For an even stronger ‘We Are the Robots’ feel, the number of analysis bands can be reduced.

Sequencer & Sampler

The FANTOM EX’s sequencer has been thoroughly revamped and now offers various recording and composition approaches in parallel, perfectly supporting ‘genre-specific’ recording methods. Instead of recording all tracks in a single pattern ‘as in the past’, the FANTOM EX offers the option to freely combine the 16 tracks and use them independently of one another. Songs can be arranged in the traditional linear manner or within the clip sequencer (similar to Ableton Live). The TR/Step sequencer, which also supports sub-steps and ratching, is ideal for programming rhythms. You can record that perfectly played piano or funky organ in real time, with or without note quantisation. The same applies to the 16 pads, which trigger individual sounds from the internal sound generator or your own samples. This way of using the pads is familiar from Akai’s MPC series. Behind the pads lies the sampler; with eight-voice polyphony, four banks of 16 pads each can be assigned. Sounds and loops can be up to 2GB in size, and time-stretching is, of course, also available for loops. The FANTOM EX’s sophisticated performance aids also include a fully-featured arpeggiator and a chord memory function.

Full DAW integration

The FANTOM EX can be fully integrated into the workflow of a DAW (including Ableton Live, Apple Logic Pro, GarageBand and MainStage). With the built-in USB audio interface, 16 stereo tracks can be recorded, edited and, most importantly, processed on the computer simultaneously. Three stereo tracks can be addressed from the DAW to the FANTOM EX; whether for editing a track with the analogue filter or as an audio output from the DAW to the main mixer. Plug-ins loaded into the DAW can be conveniently controlled and edited from the FANTOM EX; it is worth noting in passing that this also includes the song position pointer and the DAW’s entire transport panel. DAW and plug-in control settings are also saved within the scenes and are available in a matter of seconds when recalled; this requires the computer to be connected and the DAW to be open. Otherwise, these settings will not be applied upon loading.

Thanks to several USB ports, it goes without saying that, in addition to connecting to a computer and an external storage device such as a USB stick, it is possible to connect further devices. Here, for example, it makes sense to connect a second keyboard for two-manual playing, a breath controller or a fader box.
