With the Digitakt II, Elektron presents the official successor to the popular Digitakt drum machines and samplers. This compact instrument, with the same dimensions as its predecessor, offers 16 tracks that can be configured as either audio or MIDI tracks. These tracks are populated with ‘Machines’ and ultimately saved within the drum kit. The audio Machines – of which there are five different types – are specialised for various playback options for individual samples and even loops, and are highly customisable. Whether you populate a drum kit with oneshots, loops, warped samples or MIDI tracks is entirely up to the user. Anyone familiar with the first Digitakt will recognise many familiar features; overall, Version II shines thanks to numerous innovations and an enormous sense of musicality, with plenty of scope for experimentation. The famous Elektron sequencer, complete with parameter locks and a wealth of programmable dynamics, contributes significantly to this. Another highlight is the significantly increased memory capacity of the second generation: the sample RAM now totals a whopping 400 MB instead of 64 MB, and the internal +Drive memory has been expanded from 1 GB to 20 GB.
With the Digitakt II, Elektron has really pulled out all the stops and included five Audio Machines. Whilst its predecessor had to make do with just ‘Oneshot’, there are now additional options: ‘Werp’, ‘Stretch’, ‘Repitch’ and ‘Grid’. This finally makes it possible, amongst other things, to automatically adjust loops to the desired tempo via time-stretching, or to slice up loops and rearrange them within the grid. The filter section now offers interchangeable filter machines. You can choose from Multimode, Lowpass 4, Equaliser, Comb and Legacy LP/HP. This alone significantly enhances the sound palette! Each audio track also has access to the track effects Bandwidth Filter, Overdrive, Bit Reduction and Sample Rate Reduction. There have also been significant developments in terms of modulation: no fewer than three highly flexible and, above all, freely assignable LFOs per track ensure plenty of variety in the soundscape. All tracks are given the finishing touch with the superb-sounding insert effects: Saturator Delay, Supervoid Reverb and Panoramic Chorus. At the top level, there are the master effects Overdrive and Stereo Compressor to get the very most out of the audio tracks. All effects are highly customisable, ranging from subtle to club-ready to cinematic. By this point at the latest, it becomes clear that the Digitakt II is so much more than just a drum machine with a sampler. Thanks to the new Audio Machines and Filter Machines, there are so many possibilities that were previously unimaginable ‘in-the-box’. On top of that, this compact unit is the perfect sequencing hub for both small and large setups.
The sequencer on the Elektron Digitakt II is absolutely suitable for live use, quick to programme and, above all, easy to learn. Real-time and rock-solid timing are the magic words behind Elektron’s recipe for success. A total of 128 patterns can be saved. Each pattern can have a maximum length of up to 128 steps (8 bars); furthermore, each track can be assigned its own step length and scale. Naturally, the Digitakt II also supports parameter locks, allowing individual parameters to be locked to one or more steps without permanently affecting the sound. Other features, such as a Euclidean pattern generator, shuffle, micro-timing and programmable trigger probability, effectively round off the range of creative possibilities. Each of the 16 internal tracks can be configured as a MIDI track for external MIDI equipment, such as a desktop synth. The tracks are playable or programmable in four-voice polyphony, allow 16 CC parameters to be addressed, and two LFOs can be freely assigned. The keyboard mode, with 36 scales, is a great help when no MIDI keyboard is connected for note input.
