The Torso Electronics S4 Sculpting Sampler is a unique creative tool for bending and transforming samples into – and out of – any shape. With four independent stereo tracks that function not only as a sampler but also as a tape machine, this device offers great flexibility. Whether via microphone, line inputs or USB – users can load their samples directly into the device’s 4 GB of internal memory. Once imported, a wide range of editing tools is available, from granular synthesis and resampling to versatile sequencing options and a wealth of effects such as filters, reverb and delay, as well as bit crusher and overdrive. This robust unit, encased in an elegant black aluminium housing, not only offers protection against physical damage but also looks great. The large display provides a clear overview of current operations. Eight key parameters are shown in the lower third of the display and can be adjusted in detail using the corresponding rotary encoders opposite.
To allow quick access to parameter adjustments, the Torso Electronics S4 features no fewer than 8 continuous rotary controls. The parameters to be adjusted can be easily read on the display, ensuring a clear overview at all times, even during live performances.
As well as the standard line I/O, the S4 can also be used in a setup with analogue control signals – thanks to the analogue SYNC I/O. But the vast world of MIDI isn’t neglected either, as the S4 is also equipped with MIDI I/O. Ableton users can also look forward to Ableton Link compatibility via Wi-Fi.
With OS 2.0, Torso Electronics is delivering the S4’s biggest update since its launch. The update includes a complete overhaul of the core engine, introducing improvements and expanding the S4’s functionality. Highlights include macro controls, scenes, varispeed recording, playback with unlimited sample length and new dynamic modulation options. The display interfaces have also been comprehensively revamped. New functions such as copy and duplicate make operation significantly easier; both contribute immensely to an improved workflow.
