The pre-wired pickguard can be used as a drop-in replacement, requiring only the bridge ground and output jack to be soldered. Eric Johnson’s signature tone comes from a carefully selected mix of pickup configurations: the neck single coil, based on a '54 pickup, features oversized Alnico III pole pieces for detailed midrange definition and a warm, rich tone; the bridge pickup, with Alnico V magnets and a hotter winding, provides a powerful yet balanced sound; and the reverse-polarity, wound mid pickup completes the Strat’s classic tonal palette and ensures hum-free operation in positions 2 and 4.
