Granular synthesizer for radical sound design, playable textures and new ideas from every sample
With Grainferno, Baby Audio brings you a granular synthesizer that doesn't just bend samples, but transforms them into completely new instruments. Pads, drones, synth layers, rhythmic textures or controlled chaos are created from the smallest audio particles. This doesn't sound like standard granular, but rather like a tool that takes you out of familiar sounds and leads you directly into fresh sound material.
The highlight: every audio file can become a synth voice. Grainferno breaks down your material into microscopic fragments, reassembles it and turns it into playable sounds that work cleanly in the song in terms of pitch. In this way, a field recording, a vocal track or a drum loop suddenly becomes an instrument with its own character.
Grainferno works with a modern grain engine that can generate grains at such a high speed that they merge into the audio range. At this moment, grains no longer behave just like texture, but like oscillators. This is precisely what gives the plug-in its special appeal: you use real audio material as raw material, but get the feel of a synthesizer.
Even when Grainferno works tonally, a piece of the original sample always remains in the sound. This spectral signature makes the results exciting, independent and often much livelier than classic synth sounds.
One of the most exciting functions of Grainferno is the ability to work with two independent source samples. You can morph between these two signals in real time. Seven morph modes are available for this, allowing you to create hybrid soundscapes, moving transitions and shifting soundscapes.
This is extremely powerful, especially for atmospheric productions, soundtracks, future pop, hyperpop or experimental electronics. Instead of just bending a sample, you merge two sound worlds into something new.
Grainferno thrives on movement. That's why almost every important parameter can be modulated. Three envelopes, three LFOs and three random generators are available for this purpose. The special feature is the drag-and-drop workflow, which allows you to quickly drag modulation sources to destinations without losing the creative flow.
Cross-modulation between modulators is also possible. This allows you to create sounds that are constantly changing but still remain musically controllable. This makes Grainferno not just an effects tool, but a real platform for modern sound design.
Grainferno doesn't just shape the sound at the end of the chain, but at the level of each individual grain. With tools such as G-Filter, G-Comp and G-Blur, you can edit each fragment as it is created.
This creates sounds that feel different from classic synthesis or normal sample processing. From soft ambient pads and unstable drones to aggressive digital dirt, there is a huge range of possibilities here.
The integrated effects section is not intended as a simple post-processing tool, but as part of the instrument itself. Reverb, delay, modulation and saturation not only help with refinement, but are also directly part of the sound design. The freely sortable effects chain is particularly powerful , allowing you to consciously shape the behavior of the sound.
This makes Grainferno a creative hub for producers who want to create something of their own from existing samples.
Grainferno comes with a large sound base so you don't have to start from scratch. On board are 325 presets and 378 royalty-free samples that serve as raw material for the Grain engine. There are also six templates with which you can immediately try out different applications of granular synthesis.
This makes it easy to get started without the plug-in losing any of its depth. You can get started straight away or delve deep into the construction of your own sounds.
Granular synthesis is particularly exciting when you not only want to edit existing material , but also rethink it. This is exactly what Grainferno is for. Instead of relying on ready-made synth oscillators, you work with real audio material as raw material. The result often sounds more personal, more unpredictable and musically more interesting than classic off-the-shelf preset sounds.
