NYX re-issue
Classic and unusual analog sounds
The NYX Reissue from Dreadbox is an analog desktop synthesizer with a focus on rich lead sounds, basslines and slightly more complex sounds. In Greek mythology, Nyx is the goddess of the night and one of the oldest deities to emerge from chaos. In the case of this synthesizer, you enter the plane of the night with the super luuuush sounding Reverb effect and escape the chaos by rearranging the signal path and making extensive use of the patch sockets. The reissue is presented in a new housing that gives the user the choice between desktop operation or as a Eurorack module (42 HP). Power is now supplied via USB (power supply unit not included). The connections for MIDI and audio inputs and outputs are located on the front panel of the reissue.
An Eldorado for sound tinkerers
The Nyx consists of two oscillators that differ from each other in terms of octave spacing and the selection of waveforms. Glide can be controlled separately for each oscillator, and hardsync can be switched from VCO 1 to 2. The special feature of the Nyx is that you can change the signal path of oscillators, filters and modulations with three selector switches.
VCO routing: NOR - both VCOs to filter 1 / SPLIT - VCO 1 to filter 1 & VCO 2 to filter 2 / HALF - both VCOs to filter 2 / VCA - both VCOs bypass the filters and feed directly into the VCA
VCF routing: LPF - both filters in series to Lowpass (24dB) / HPF - both filters in series to Highpass (24dB) / EVEN - both filters on lowpass, but connected in parallel (2x 12dB LPF) / ODD - filter 1 is lowpass, filter 2 is highpass, both connected in parallel (2x 12dB LPF/HPF)
MOD routing: SINGLE - modulator 1 controls both filters / DUAL - modulators 1 & 2 control both filters / SPLIT - modulator 1 controls filter 1, modulator 2 controls filter 2 / ODD - modulator 1 controls both filters and modulator 2 controls the second filter
The filter itself is a resonant 12/24dB Dual filter with Lowpass and Highpass characteristics. At higher resonance, it tends to color the signal strongly and packs a punch, especially in the lower frequency range. The dense and rich-sounding reverb effect completes the signal path.
Things get really wild with the patch field
The modulation section consists of a vibrato LFO for both oscillators and three rise/fall envelopes with loop mode. In Loop-Mode the respective envelope becomes an LFO, but with the special feature that the waveform always changes with the set speed. Including the control voltage and audio inputs and outputs results in new sounds that would not be possible without the patch sockets. Classic oscillator sync solos, keytracking for the filter, PWM in the modulation wheel and noise as an additional sound source cover only a fraction of the possibilities.
