A 7/8 classical guitar is a classical guitar with a slightly reduced size compared to a full-size 4/4 classical guitar. It is especially suitable for teenagers who have already outgrown a 3/4 classical guitar but are not yet fully comfortable with a 4/4 model. Adults with smaller hands and a shorter arm reach also often choose a 7/8 classical guitar. In addition, it makes a practical second instrument for travelling.
With a shorter scale length of around 610 to 630 mm, a 7/8 classical guitar generally requires less effort when fretting than the standard 650 mm scale length of a 4/4 guitar. This often makes even more complex chord shapes easier to play for smaller hands. The body width is reduced in proportion to the scale length, while the body depth is usually similar to that of a full-size classical guitar.
A classical guitar in 7/8 size is not simply a smaller version of a standard model, but a carefully proportioned instrument designed for a balanced combination of playability and tonal response. Thanks to its only slightly reduced dimensions, it offers a convincing balance between playing comfort and tonal fullness. This makes it an appealing alternative to a standard-size guitar for both teenagers and adults with smaller hands.
