Semi-Acoustic Guitars

Buy a semi acoustic guitar – which body style suits your sound?

Semi acoustic guitars are amplified guitars with a more resonant body. They often feel warmer, airier and more dynamic than many solidbody guitars, while their playing feel and practical use remain clearly in the world of electric guitars.

The body style is the key point. Semi hollow models are usually versatile and easy to control, while hollowbody guitars resonate more strongly and are especially interesting for warm clean sounds, jazz, blues or rockabilly.

What makes these guitars different?

The main difference from a solid electric guitar is the body. Depending on the model, hollow chambers, F-holes, a larger resonance chamber or a centre block affect how the guitar responds and how lively it feels when played.

The signal is still captured by pickups and played through a guitar amplifier. The acoustic part of the body influences tone colour, dynamics and playing feel.

More resonance

The body vibrates more and gives the guitar a more open basic character.

Electric guitar setup

These guitars are played through amplifiers, pedals or recording setups like other electric guitars.

Distinctive playing feel

Body size, weight and construction can feel very different from one model to another.

Body styles: semi hollow, hollowbody and more

The body style determines how strongly the guitar resonates, how controlled it remains at higher volume and which sounds come most naturally.

What matters when buying?

Besides sound, handling and intended use are important. A larger hollowbody can be very appealing for warm clean sounds, while a more compact semi hollow electric guitar often remains easier to control in a band context.

  • Body size: affects playing comfort, resonance and transport.
  • Feedback behaviour: important at higher volume, with overdrive or on stage.
  • Pickups: humbuckers, P90s and other pickups have a major influence on the sound.
  • Amplifier: clean headroom, crunch response and effects also shape the final tone.
  • Accessories: instrument cable, strap, stand and a gig bag or case are useful for everyday use.

Frequently asked questions

What is a semi acoustic guitar?

It is an amplified guitar with a more resonant body. It often sounds more open and warmer than many solid electric guitars, but it is still played through an amplifier like an electric guitar.

Semi hollow or hollowbody: which is better?

Semi hollow is usually more versatile and easier to control. Hollowbody often sounds warmer and more resonant, but reacts more strongly to volume and gain.

Do you need an amplifier?

Yes, for normal use you need a guitar amplifier or a recording setup.

Is this type of guitar suitable for beginners?

Yes, if the size, weight and playing feel are comfortable. More compact semi hollow models can be a good starting point.

Can you play rock on it?

Yes, especially semi hollow models are well suited to blues rock, indie, pop rock and classic crunch sounds.
