What Is a Follow Spot?

A follow spot, also known as a Follow-Spot, is a specialised spotlight used in stage lighting. It creates a movable light source that can follow actors, musicians, or speakers as they move across the stage or venue. This can be achieved either manually or automatically by an operator, often referred to as the "spot operator". The key features of a follow spot include its high light intensity and the ability to adjust the beam’s size and intensity. Colour filters are often used to produce different hues. Follow spots are essential for highlighting key moments in shows and performances.

What Types of Follow Spots Are There?

Follow spots are available in various types to meet the specific needs of different productions or events. Modern LED follow spots use LED technology, known for its energy efficiency and long lifespan. These often provide multiple colour options and are typically lighter in weight than traditional models. Halogen follow spots use halogen bulbs and are valued for their intense brightness and warm light quality. For larger events and concerts, HMI or MSD follow spots are often used, which employ gas-discharge lamps and deliver very high light output.

Generally, follow spots can be categorised based on output, light source, and colour control:

  • Output: The output determines the reach of the beam. For short to medium distances (around 20 metres), a 160-watt follow spot is usually sufficient. Larger models with 600 watts can reach distances of up to 120 metres.
  • Light: A distinction is made between warm white and cool white light. Cool white is typically preferred due to its historical reliability in larger units, although newer models now also offer warm white options without issue.
  • Colour: Modern LED follow spots often feature a colour wheel with various built-in filters. Older models use manual filters placed or flipped in front of the lens.

What Defines a High-Quality Follow Spot?

High-quality follow spots stand out through their brightness and light quality, delivering powerful illumination and excellent colour rendering. Precision control is essential, allowing the operator to direct and adjust the beam accurately. Reliability is critical, especially for frequent use in live performance settings. Buyers should also consider quiet operation and low noise levels during use.

Overall, versatility, ease of use, durability, and moderate weight for mobility are key factors when choosing a professional-grade follow spot.
