Evoke's Acoustronic Sounds
The Sonicware LIVEN Evoke at a glance
The LIVEN Evoke from Sonicware is a digital synthesizer for ambient and textured sounds with a sequencer. The purely digital sound generation is a completely new development and combines elements from subtractive synthesis with traditional instruments and a special backward modulation called Backtide. New sounds can be created on four tracks and processed with their own envelope, multimode filter and two LFOs . Finally, there are the two good-sounding effect blocksReverb and Granular. The sonic focus is clearly on synthesized sounds whose origin could be found in a band or an orchestra. The two effects complement the sound spectrum in a very atmospheric direction, which is ideal for ambient sounds and meandering sound clusters.
Sound generation
In the LIVEN Evoke, Sonicware relies on the specially developed Acoustronic Flux Oscillator Synthesis with Backtide Modulation. This new type of sound generation consists of the elementsAcoustic Characteristics Array and the Harmonic Array. A filterable noise generator can also be added. The Acoustic Characteristics Array (INST) uses a selection of 34 sounds, all of which can be located in the area of classical keyboard, string, plucked and wind instruments. Each of these acoustic sounds contains 256 individual elements through which the backtide modulation rolls like an ebbing tide. The Harmonic Array (WAVE) offers 20 waveforms, which are mainly known from subtractive synthesis. They each have 128 harmonic elements and allow pitch control in the range of +/- 2 octaves. By interweaving INST and WAVE, Evoke delivers a broad spectrum of sounds, ranging from nostalgic pianos and drone strings to bizarre vibraphones. Each of the four tracks is equipped with a subsequent sound shaping stage consisting of an attack/release envelope, a multimode filter with lowpass, Bandpass and Highpass characteristics and two LFOs with freely assignable destinations. Two effect blocks complete the signal path; reverb is available in 10 variants and sounds really good. The other effect block is a special granular effect called Grain FX. This effect breaks down the incoming audio material into tiny particles and transforms and recombines them by rearranging the spatial position and time base during playback. All parameters and processes are synchronized to achieve a musically usable result.
How BACKTIDE Works
Sequencer
The four-track sequencer can be programmed live or step-by-step in the TR grid and has a memory capacity of 128 patterns, each of which can be up to 64 steps long. Recording parameter locks brings life and variety to the patterns. The synthesized sounds can be played chromatically via the 27 mini keys, which is a great musical gain. With the step randomizer, the programmed notes in the pattern are jumped to randomly instead of sequentially. Thanks to various voice modes, each track can be played polyphonically, monophonically, legato or as an arpeggio; for the latter, there are a number of playback patterns that can be incorporated into live playing.
