The Sterling by Music Man John Petrucci MAJ170 Majesty Chalk Grey is the seven-string signature model of Dream Theater’s guitar virtuoso, offering an innovative design crafted for supreme playability and powerful, versatile tones suited to heavy genres. With its ergonomic body shape, unrestricted upper fret access, and versatile electronics including hot humbuckers and an active 12dB boost, the MAJ170 is engineered for both expressive soloing and thunderous riffing. Additional premium features such as the SBMM Modern Tremolo system and locking tuners round off this formidable instrument.
Developed in close collaboration with John Petrucci, the Majesty series represents a leap forward in ergonomic electric guitar design. The body and neck are both crafted from Nyatoh, offering a lightweight yet resonant construction that provides long-term playing comfort whether seated or standing. The deep, sculpted cutaways provide unhindered access to all 24 frets, making even the highest notes easily accessible. The wide D-shaped neck profile and flat 16" (406 mm) fingerboard radius are tailor-made for technical precision and speed – ideal for progressive metal playing styles.
To handle the demands of John Petrucci’s dynamic playing style, the MAJ170 is equipped with two Sterling by Music Man humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions. These pickups provide a powerful output with a harmonically rich tone, offering tight lows, singing sustain, and excellent note separation – even under high-gain conditions. Whether you're delivering crushing rhythm parts or soaring leads, the tone remains clear and articulate. A standout feature is the active 12dB boost, engaged via the push/pull volume control. This onboard preamp offers additional headroom and saturation when needed – perfect for solos that need to cut through a dense mix or for boosting cleans into edge-of-breakup territory.
For expressive pitch modulation and tuning stability, the MAJ170 is fitted with a SBMM Modern Tremolo. Mounted on two posts, this bridge offers smooth travel for both up and down bends, while the individually adjustable saddles ensure precise intonation and custom string action – even with heavy strings and down-tuned setups. Paired with SBMM Locking Tuners in the signature 4+2 headstock layout, the guitar stays securely in tune, even during aggressive tremolo use.
